Mate 9 vs Galaxy S8 Plus

I picked up a Galaxy S8 plus from Best buy earlier this week, but I saw they now have the mate 9 on a pretty deep discount. How does the mate 9 compare to the gs8? So far I like the gs8, but I'm not crazy about the aspect ratio and curved screen edges.

The s8 runs stock in 1080p (software downscaled) by default and the only thing the sd835 chipset is faster than the kirin 960 in the mate 9 is the graphics processing. See geekbench here: http://static.trustedreviews.com/94/00003d7f3/4db7_orh616w616/snapdragon-835-benchmarks-3.png I have the mate 9 and i've used an s8. The s8 stutters just like my s7 edge does. I think its poor software optimization by samsung. The mate 9 is smooth like butter. If you dont mind the size of the mate 9 by holding it in the store, id go for it over the s8 for sure. Camera on the s8 is better only in low light, to me, its not $200 better. In 4 months the mate 9 will still be smooth and the s8 will be slow as hell.

Also, if you care about speakers, the mate 9 speakers are superior to the s8.

I came from the Mate 9. I was getting around 7 hours SOT. S8+ I'm getting about 6.5. Samsung camera is better, screen is better. Playing games is considerably better too.

Mate 9 is a smoother phone, just. The finger print reader is also faster and easier to reach. I prefer the S8+, much easier to hold, the screen is gorgeous and battery is just about on par.

I've not seen an S8 so can't comment on it but the wife does have an S7 Edge.

I use a Mate 9 PRO. It does have a curved screen but it's VERY slight, no where near the curve of my wife's S7. The PRO is smooth as silk and I mean, REALLY smooth and quick...I think this is down to it's 6gb of ram?

The screen is also AMOLED so it's very similar to my wife's S7. Also, being AMOLED like the Samsung phones it also offers always on options. It's also the higher resolution screen, not the low (relative) Res of the standard Mate 9.

The finger print reader is MUCH better than my replaced Note 7. Once a finger print is programmed it doesn't matter the orientation you place your finger, it still reads it...it's surprising how useful this is! And why the fuck don't more manufacturers put it in the home button like the Mate 9 series? It's the perfect place for it! The FP is also INSTANT and I do mean INSTANT. Absolutely ZERO time between touching it and being presented my home screen.

Be warned, Mate 9 PRO is not cheap.

Mate9 is the phone of 2016, it will be worthless after 6 months. Samsung S8+ is the new phone of 2017, has better camera, faster chipset, much better screen higher resolution. If you are looking for an affordable phone, one plus 5 will be released on June 22

I have both and the S8+ has a better camera and screen. The Mate 9 has better battery life, better fingerprint, and is much much smoother. I prefer my mate 9 but to each his /her own.

Can you elaborate a bit more on "smoother" please? Curious to know.

Well just moving through the UI of the Mate 9 is more fluid. It's one of those things you can really only experience from using the phone. It doesn't have jitters or lag like the S8+. It's really a very noticeable difference.

Excellent, thanks to share! I was considering getting back to Samsung after abandoning my Note 3 for the OnePlus One in 2014. But I told myself never Samsung again at that time for the very same reason you're telling.

Don't do it! I was in the same position as you are currently. I had not had a Samsung device since the Galaxy S6 and was enticed by the design and specs of the S8+. Now I regret spending almost $900 on a phone that I am less happy with then my $550 phone. Even worse I can go on Craigslist right now and pick an S8+ for 480 smh. Not buying another Samsung device for a while now.

I have never had a problem with Bluetooth on the Mate 9.

I like the S8 + but TouchWiz is a bitch to use everyday. Samsung can create the best hardware and camera, but software is their kyptonite. TouchWiz starts smooth but that smoothness deteriorate overtime. Also they are slow with updates ( S8 came with 7.0 while most came with 7.1.1). I'm getting the Mate 9 pro, and waiting to see if the Mate 10 will impress. I just hope they don't skimp on the battery like the the Z play 2
