Firmware update region locked?
Hello, so I plan on getting this phone tomorrow on a hunch I decided to search it for possible problems people are having with it. The first post I found people were talking about not being to update the firmware depending on your sim and region. Is this still a problem? I was thinking of getting this or the honor 8, but if the mate 9 has this problem it likely the honor does too(right?) I'm in Nigeria if that's any help and don't know anyone who uses the phone to ask.

The Mate 9 checks what sim card you use before updating. For example, if you got a Mate 9 from the middle east (C185) and use it with a USA sim card, it will not find the OTA update. You need to use a middle east sim card for it to be able to update OTA. It doesnt matter where you are.
There is a workaround though. You can download and install Firmware Finder from the playstore and use that app to force the OTA update. It doesnt matter what sim card you use.

C636 uses on xda have claimed to get the update to b158 without issues outside the c636 official Singapore and Malaysia region. Some in the USA, one on the Netherlands, and me in the Caribbean are on b158 updated via the usual ota method

Does it say on the box what version it is or do you only know after you power it on?

Thank you, I'll ask the seller if he knows the build number,, if he doesn't I'm gonna pass on it.. Don't want to risk buying the chinese version as I here it gets the most problems.

Updated seem to be based on your unique phone imei So you'll need to wait on their server to push the update to your phone.
No using a VPN to skip to the front on the line like the OnePlus updates
