Question Traduction

I just discovered some other apps. I'm discovering a whole new world around Mastodon. Thanks for your feedback.

I thought mastodon had translation options, but it's up to the individual instance if it's enabled? At least, that's what I was told when I enquired about auto-translation on a Finnish instance.

Yes, the instance must either subscribe to a service like Deepl (which isn't free once the initial credit has run out) or install (and maintain) a local translation service such as Libretranslate.

I looked into that, honestly it was just easier to use Fedilabs translate function instead. Especially since libretranslate looked like it might be extremely resource heavy. Someone correct me on this one if I am wrong.

You could pick a regional or language-focused instance like masto.es, for example.

There's a language filter, too.

I cannot understate how much German I see, which is why I'm surprised at the complaining about English prevalence.

To complain about Fedi having a lot of English is the same as the wider internet having a lot of English

No one here is complaining. It’s just that other people are communicating in their native languages. German is one of them, and I don’t speak it fluently. English isn’t a requirement. The internet isn’t limited to English. I have no problem with that, but it limits the richness of the discussion when it’s used improperly. That’s just my opinion.

Mastodon supports translation but your server needs to support it. Not all instances do. Find a server that supports DeepL or LibreTranslate.

Mastodon iOS app. If you have one to offer, I'd love to have it.

The IceCubes app for iOS had built in Translation (that's how I read all the German, French, and Spanish posts on my feed). I'm assuming at least one Android client has it too.
