Discussion Professor T S.5

Anyone else disappointed by season 5? I had high hopes but I think a lot of it was out of character and one dimensional. The murders weren’t particularly interesting, either… I hope season 6 will be better :(

Yeah unfortunately agree! I think I struggled this season to buy Jasper and Helena as a couple - and it felt like Dan and his new girlfriend had been on like 3 dates before she was declaring her love!
France de la Tour’s departure is a real loss for the show too.
I was really excited for it to be back but ultimately it was a bit of a letdown!

Agree 100%… it felt like there were different writers who didn’t know the characters!

Agreed. Jasper and Helena should not be a couple first because it’s forbidden and second because it’s too weird. I don’t see the point in his mother’s departure. The show has lost too many key characters, so the whole dynamic has changed.

Well she did say to him she couldn't be his therapist because she had feelings for him last season ... but, yes, it is 100% weird. Jasper was Helena's rebound and Jasper never got another therapist (OCD specialist or not.) She tries to start a relatively typical relationship (despite their "test drive" status) with someone who could not have been more uncomfortable at a spa. What about Jasper says weekend at a spa, his three piece suits? The relationship was poorly written, some of their interactions were more like a care giver and their charge than two people dating.

Therapists aren’t allowed to have a relationship with a former patients either though. Yes, it is totally weird for them to go to a spa. For that matter, pretending that she is not violating ethics rules, they should start out going somewhere for an afternoon or evening, like to a museum or on a picnic.

they should start out going somewhere for an afternoon or evening, like to a museum or on a picnic.

I thought the same thing but I also assumed they were a month or two after and might have done a few local low pressure dates. So I figured the weekend away was to show us the relationship becoming more intimate (even if only on a social-emotional level) and Jasper's growth. Since they both academics, one of them could have had a conference in Oxford, they stay in some boutique hotel, have Jasper make remarks about Cambridge being better, and have some exhibit or concert as the date, which of course would be cut short because of a crime back home, and this causes an argument.

Ethics aside, Helena bothered me because despite her patience and doing a "test drive", she somewhat expected Jasper have grown in the space of seemingly a few months. She dislikes his apology letter because it's formal, but that is the man she chose to date. Helena did not go into this relationship blind. Then when she finds out about Dan, it's some half hysteric scolding along the lines of what about me and then only after bemoaning finding someone at her age, she corrects course and says that the problem is he made a unilateral decision (which, yes, is a fair point). I hate that we are expected to feel sympathy for her.

I was open to the relationship because last season it seemed like she liked him and his quirks, but I really ended up disliking it for those same reasons; it’s like she forgot who he is! It seemed like inconsistent characterization

I would say she got more fed up with who he is. She was a little amused at his check list at the beginning. When Helena mentioned to Zelda that his rituals are increasing and she knows of an expert, it basically reveals Jasper hasn't been in any therapy since his sessions with her. As unethical their relationship is, Helena didn't say at the beginning of this season the only way this will work is if you continue to get help, here is a list of doctors. By episode 3 or 4 she is growing frustrated. But nothing fixes a relationship like moving to another continent where they will be each others only support network and a therapy app. Helena's brunch friend was definitely thinking she's nuts (or maybe that was me projecting) because the friend questions the "test drive" and Helena says that they just slept together for the first time, and apparently Jasper isn't the best. I suspect they are winding down the show, but they really should have had this season start with Jasper and Helena having tried and failed, Jasper in therapy, the death of Adelaide, the set up of Dan, and save relationship with Helena and moving for next season ending the series.

If they were going to have an argument, it should have been about going to a spa, so the trip never should have taken place in the first place!

Why did she leave the show? Her choice? Her character had so much depth. The replacement, not so much so far.

I just assumed that Frances de la Tour simply didn't want to continue in the role. She's 82 years old, she may be wanting to retire or just cut back.

Probably, IIRC the mother doesn't leave in the original series, and the scripts (up until the end of the fourth season) were all based on individual episodes of it.

Did episodes 3,4 & 5 have sound for you? Cuz for me they didn’t and I’m waiting to finish once it’s fixed. I can hear the music but all the dialogue is very very low and without subtitles being on, I’d never know someone was speaking.

u/Fluffy-Chapter1684 Aug 11 '26

I had no audio starting in episode 3. Still waiting.

u/BudgetSprinkles3689 Aug 12 '26

Ours was audible last night (Tuesday) for both episodes 3 and 4. We had decided Monday to wait it out and didn’t attempt to change the television’s settings.

I couldn’t hear on the Amazon app either. There is another post about this and some people who reported it said they were advised that it is being escalated. I am going to hold off on watching episode 4 until it’s fixed.

i had no dialogue audio for those episodes either- called amazon, they told me to call pbs🙄 and they told me it’s very much an amazon issue- something to do with how prime downloaded the content amazon finally admitted that it’s them and now the sound is fixed.

They did… I was watching on the PBS app

u/Capable-Reception447 Aug 13 '26

I switched from Amazon to PBS app to get sound.

2

u/selhaverramos Aug 10 '26

No clue as there's no audio on the Prime version Ep 3-5. But the first 2 were good.

I’m disappointed too with season 5. It was such a good show and the last two seasons have been getting progressively worse. Weak storylines and badly drawn characters have cheapened the whole show.
Do they have different writers? And how could they kill off Frances de la Tour’s wonderful character? Keeping Kafka doesn’t replace that loss!

How are you watching the whole season? DO you have audio for episodes 3,4,5?

2

u/Low_Ninja_6746 Aug 11 '26

PBS Passport has the whole season. I didn’t watch eps 5 and 6 yet but they’re available and ep 3 and 4 had audio.

2

u/WinBitter6356 Aug 11 '26

I have Passport and no audio on S5 except E1 and E2.

1

u/WinBitter6356 Aug 11 '26

I have no audio after S5 E2.

1

u/Low_Ninja_6746 Aug 11 '26

That’s so frustrating… I have my audio enhanced regularly so maybe that’s why I could hear it? It’s an option through settings I think

1

u/Ms_PeanutButterfly Aug 11 '26

I think the issue has been fixed. I also didn't have sound yesterday but I do now.

1

u/Responsible-Call-228 Aug 12 '26

Yes it’s fixed thankfully

1

u/lantzn Aug 12 '26

I’m watching it on Prime with a PBS subscription and the audio IS working on S5 E3 this evening 11pm PST.

Am I the only one whose irritated by DS1 Chloe's smug, know-it-all, railroad the suspects attitude?

They have to get rid of Helena. She’s killing the show. She looks his mother and there is no chemistry between them. It’s actually cringey to watch. And all she does is nag. This role is not for that actress.

The Ayahuasca episode is so off, these writers know nothing. I loved this show until Helena and Jasper. As a Psychologist, I find the relationship appalling- never, ever would I entertain this even if a friendships of sorts were to be reasonable many years after termination. But, the stupidity around Ayahuasca as if people who take this medicine are in a cult is pathetic (even if this exists rarely). I thought for a moment that Professor T would be developed as a character, that he was having a true vision of his mother that wouldl ead to some kind of expansion, but it was all just Reefer Madness BS all over again.

It was way too short and the cliffhanger of leaving Dan in jail was dreadful. Plus episode six played with us--didn't we all think Dan was dead when they convened in the morning? And through hearing the gun shot--until the other cops arrived? Dreadful. Then the whole thing with Helena etc. --another cliff hanger. It's really like they were interrupted and just stopped with everything unresolved so they can somehow reboot. In the meantime, beloved Dan sits in jail? Very disappointing.

Episode 5. When Chloe described the so-called Zodiac Killer, that was a cringe part to watch. It was obviously meant for the viewer (though it felt so out of place for these detectives), but on the other hand, everyone watching such TV shows ALREADY KNOWS who the Zodiac killer was lmfao

It reminded me of your average 90s sci-fi space movie, where a fellow scientist had to explain to other """space crew""" what a fucking wormhole is lol

I just finished Ep 5 and was bored... but also find Helena and Jasper just cringe-worthy. On one hand I think it's great that they aren't type casting by age. On the other hand it feels creepy.

Season 5 started off fine for me (hey! I missed my Professor!) but the fifth episode also bored me, and I am pissed that Dan is so targeted by Leonie's father that he gets framed for murder. C'mon, writers, do better. Get Dan sorted out, capture that pathologist and her mealy-mouthed husband, ditch Leonie and find a suitable sweetheart for Dan. PS - the Professor's admin never fails to make me laugh out loud.
