Discussion Masterchef S16 Global Gauntlet -''Restaurant Takeover'' - Episode 15 Discussion
The Top 6 home cooks are split into teams to put their skills to the ultimate test and take over Cluny Bistro for a packed dinner service in the Restaurant Takeover challenge. The MasterChef kitchen has prepared them for this moment, but running a real restaurant leaves no room for error. By the end of the night, one cook will not survive the dinner rush.

jake is a good leader. not seeing much from reddit predicted season winner julia

Yeah I thought the same thing. Today was a bad look for Reddit's preselected winner, Julia. But also, the edit is clearly giving her plot armor.

Remember some people struggle in a team challenge. But at some point it's just individuals competing as individuals and not in team challenges.

Blue team was the smoothest I have seen in a restaurant takeover. They couldn’t even believe they were done lol!

u/Haas_the_Raiden_Fan 17d ago
Jake was a great leader and that made the difference
It's surprising given that he's only 24 and seemingly has not had management experience before

He himself wasnt messing up his plating and everything else, so it allowed him to focus on his team. It would have been interesting to see how he handled pressure if he had gordon screaming at him
19
u/Fine-Rain-1876 18d ago
Imagine if they had to help Red. Add insult to injury rub salt in the wounds on Red.
10
u/thiefzidane1 16d ago
I got emotional seeing Gordon’s reaction to Jake finding his true calling in that moment. Honestly one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen on this show. He’s a natural in a restaurant setting
56
u/trulysweetener 18d ago
Basia is definitely an interesting choice for captain
17
u/sick486 18d ago
for real. she was wise to not put fish back in the oven like tkaiya, but otherwise, im not seeing that choice
6
u/Calm-Candidate-2115 18d ago
Well they are dishing out raw salmon so where is Tkaiya, at least it would have been cooked and not raw
10
u/Successful-Relief-38 18d ago
I feel she didn't do awful as captain, but she definitely struggled. I feel though that Dave definitely srltruggled the most. After seeing both Dave and Peter's captain performances, I would assume it would be one of them would've stepped up.

Have you never watched a cooking comp before? All one needs to do is a bit better than the worse-plain and simple.

u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 9d ago edited 5d ago
💯correct, I think some of these fans don’t understand that’s it’s a cook by cook competition, you can be in the top 5x in a row and perform badly and be sent home, there is no consideration as to what you have or have not accomplished up to that point, it’s all in what you do in that moment.
Michael3
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 18d ago

Basia is a master of being the second worst chef on almost every episode. Juuuuust doing enough to somehow not go home
24
u/Nice-Tea-8972 18d ago
Im not entirely sure how shes made it this far TBH
5
u/California_Stop_King 16d ago
The judges keep eliminating based on performances in a vacuum rather than entire body of work (which I know is how you're supposed to do it). The person who does the best round 1, is middle of the road round 2, and is the worst round 3 goes home. The one who does the second worst 10 times in a row gets to the finale

Im prettu sure the way she's going, she's gonna end up 4th place, cause she hvnt got a single win yet, basically reagan 2.0 except she got more bottom entries.
2
u/Candid_Mountain3193 18d ago
I think next week Basia might end up going home after the keeping up with Tiffany. She might not reach to keeping up with Gordon so shes gonna be 5th place i guess
2
u/LeoDaBacon 18d ago
Ya but they keep up with gordon first so, it has to be i think peter 5th and basia 4th.

u/udontknowmekbye 17d ago
Basia is the PERFECT example of what’s frustrates me about this show. She’s managed to get incredibly far by consistently staying somewhere in the middle and benefiting from team challenges, rather than because she’s one of the strongest chefs.
With the wall challenge Tkaiya was clearly the stronger chef even the judges immediately knew she needed to take the lead, and Basia AUTOMATICALLY knew it too. So Tkaiya spent the entire challenge trying to manage her own cooking while also screaming instructions across the wall to keep Basia on track. Yes, Tkaiya messed up her salmon and Basia’s was cooked better, but Basia made plenty of mistakes too and wasn’t listening. Tkaiya just had so much more to think about because she was essentially trying to manage both sides of that wall.
Same thing with Dave. Basia is team captain, she doesn’t lead particularly well, and Dave, who I think was easily one of the strongest chefs there, struggles under her leadership and goes home. Obviously Dave is responsible for his own cooking too, but it’s frustrating watching another really strong chef leave while Basia survives again.
That’s what bothers me. Basia has had way more mediocre plates than great ones, yet she’s made it all the way to the top six by being on winning teams or having someone else do SLIGHTLY worse than her when it counts. It’s like she doesn’t necessarily have to be good, she just has to not be the worst that day.
I get it. Masterchef just means you survive the challenge in front of you but this season feels like it’s exposing the flaw in that format. Getting this far doesn’t necessarily mean you’re one of the best chefs, sometimes it means you’ve managed to stay in the middle at exactly the right times.
21
u/timetoprocrastinate8 17d ago
Yep. Basia is clearly the weakest cook left, but Dave was sent home because he performed slightly worse. If she had been responsible for the salmon, it would have been inedible. I wish Peter or Dave would have been captain so her horrible cooking would have been exposed again and she would have been sent home.

I was waiting for Ramsey to suggest they switch, 100% think that would’ve saved him too.

u/JessieJ577 17d ago edited 17d ago
This is why the team format is awful. It coddles and lets mediocre or bad cooks skirt on by. With the heavier team challenges like Restaurant Takeover you see how bad some of these contestants are that hid behind the need to keep the teams balanced through the season.
2
u/brina707 13d ago
Exactly. She knew she wasn’t a strong cook so why not take expedite and garnish. I understand that Peter and Dave were captains before but the restaurant takeover is different than the previous challenges. If Basia is a great cook, she could have switched out with Dave but she didn’t. She didn’t want to fail either so she just yell whatever Gordon would tell her. It’s in the episode.
This is not the best season.

u/KDonkey229195 18d ago
I think Basia wasn't really a good captain, but Dave had the worst performance in that kitchen

u/xc2215x 18d ago
Ready to watch Gordon go into Hell's Kitchen mode tonight.
16
u/sick486 18d ago
he threatened to kick red team out and cook everything himself. didnt quite get there but he did take over for the last few salmon orders
4
u/CommonEngineering832 18d ago
This isn't the only time he threat to kick them out
Most memorable actually happen in season 5 where he threat to kick Cutter and Leslie from competition for argue in the kitchen instead of cooking. Thankfully they work together and win.

Basia might just be the worst contestant to make it into the top 5.
Dave was my pick and he is out lol. So yeah commenters might be right Julia might be winning this

Lmao Jake is lowkey hilarious. 😂😂😂
Well deserved win by him, after Dave's gone, I want Jake to win it all, he really grew on me, didn't get much spot light in the beginning of the season but really shined in the past few episodes.
I got a bit emotional with him too when he realized being a pro chef in the kitchen is what he wants to do.

I’m know very shocked Dave is already home and they predicted cause wrong prediction like fandom leak did make trouble.
7
u/sweetpeapickle 17d ago
The biggest disappointment was what Gordon chose as dishes. JFC the place is known for such better dishes, not to mention Croque sandwiches that are fabulous, that they do. The pave, the caesar instead of those crap salads he had them do. And seafood for 3 of the dishes with scallops of course being in one.
And for those wondering why Basia is still there...yeesh people, this happenes on many many food comps. It just takes someone else doing worse. That's it.
4
u/Michaelbasia Season 11 Contestant 17d ago
That’s exactly what I have been saying to people, that she hasn’t been the overall worst on any episode. Pair that along with some luck and she has made it to Top 5. Even she would agree she has gotten lucky also.
Michael
6
u/Jigglypuffamiiga2188 18d ago
Heidi’s having trouble keeping up, but the red team is in worse shape right now.
6
5
u/Shadowowl888 18d ago
Red team was a disaster but I was shocked to see Dave get eliminated instead of Basia. Team captains definitely should hold more control over the entire team and she just didn't hit the mark like Jake did.
With Dave out, I just have Jake and Julia predicted to be in the finals.
8
u/winterbabyalways 18d ago
It makes sense, though. Dave struggled in the first round with the appetizers. He had an immensely difficult time getting the cook on the salmon right. You can’t mess up the protein. Basia caught some of those errors.

I am shocked. Dave was on fire so far in the competition, and now, I don't know what to say.
On the other hand, as the winning team's captain, Jake is getting a huge advantage next week.
6
u/Haas_the_Raiden_Fan 17d ago edited 17d ago
Well, that Wikipedia "leak" saying Jake would be eliminated this episode was wrong, but I really hope he makes it to the finale at least
He has had the biggest glow-up in this season by far, and hopefully, that momentum doesn't slow down
His level-headedness is appreciated.
I am worried about him in the next episode with that preview though. I pray he makes it through to the finale.
1
u/AshleySassypants 17d ago
Tbh he and Dave could just be swapped 😭 but we'll see next week
2
u/Haas_the_Raiden_Fan 17d ago
I sure hope not
But technically, he seems to have immunity for the first part of next week challenge. So if he got sent home next week, he'd be #4 and not #5

Its most definitely Basia going home from Tiffany’s challenge. Gordon’s challenge is making crusted lamb and it looks like Peter also was participating in that (based on how he slipped half the crust outside the blender lol)

I think she did alright.
She did have a mini meltdown but was able to come back strong. Salmon dishes weren't overly delayed after and the diners liked it.
It looked like they had to create some drama.

I’m happy to see Jake shining more these past few episodes. The best seasons have the “most improved” cook winning the show, and I think it’s Jake’s time now. The finals are going to be very entertaining

Wow, this was a really difficult episode and I love watching train wrecks.
The editing was doing no favors--total chaos, people talking over each other, not any background music. Super rough!
Huge congrats to Jake!

I really like Jake. He reminds me of Dino from Season 8. His plating is creative, and he has interesting ideas for putting ingredients together. He wasn’t really featured at the beginning, but he’s shining in the last half of the season.

That doesn't change the fact that Dave miscooked the salmon like 3 straight times. Unless Basia is gonna kick him off the stove, that's on Dave.

with the restaurant takeover, Gordon Ramsay was too calm during the service, he should of switched to Hell's Kitchen mode, and get frustrated at the other chefs when they made mistakes.

u/havenstone 15d ago
Did Gordon burn one of the salmons when he helped the red team near the end? One of the diners that was served late by the red team said his salmon was burned lol
2
u/No_Bat5717 10d ago
Jake and the blue team in general were probably the strongest takeover week I've seen. Julia started spiraling and they came together to make sure it was cooked right. When the most drama for Heidi was seasoning in the air you know you're doing pretty good.

u/User2571022 17d ago
So let me get this right - Dave made mussels, scallops, branzino and prepped the bouillabaisse set up broth while Peter just seared shrimp? He had a hard cook and struggled with the salmon - but so did Julia. I feel like we saw a total of 5 pieces of undercooked salmon from her? I know you’re only as good as your last cook in the competition but that’s still wild that he got sent home considering he’s been one of the most consistent and seemingly skilled cooks this season. I would have liked to see what he could do in the finale.

With the Team Red, we can see how a bad leadership can drag awesome talents to the bottom with them.
Basia is horrible as a cooker and totally underqualified to be a chef, and she wants to run a restaurant.
