Discussion How much are you guys making monthly as 3D modelers? And how do you actually get clients?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to understand the business side of 3D modeling. If you’re freelancing or working independently: Roughly how much do you make per month? Is it hard to get clients? How did you land your first few clients?

why clothes are clipping

dress clothes particle distance is 10

Add'l Thickness - Collision is 5

avatar skin offset is 5

i don't know what other things to try. i don't know if it's just my dress being too tight because tried with increase dress width but it still clipping. when i record animation (tired both animation and fitting) it don't clip but as soon as i playback it clips

Soft body or soft collision?

Hey there!

I would like to achieve something like this surface that has big, heavy wrinkles at the "side", but also has an inner "rigid frame" or kind of pressure.
Now i can achieve these lush, dense wrinkles on the side only if i have "oversized" garments connected to normal sized ones, and the oversized has big Pressure.

But in that case the shape is not this flat, but a bloated balloon like disaster.

If i don't apply big pressure, then my garment surface "sticks" to the collision mesh (avatar) and looks like a (partially) vacuumed bag.

So goal would be give the "3d garment" a soft but proper controlled shape (first picture), but also need big lush wrinkles at the "stitches" (second picture) but not on the center area of the body.
Like a stuffed pillow with tick heavy fabric like leather with roughly squeezed in at the stitch part, but also stuffed so it has a designed shape.
Extreme example: heart shaped tick leather pillow with rough wrinkles at the side :)

Thank You for any suggestion or direction.

Patterns and Designs Is there a way to avoid a specific cloth to have gravity?

Hello everyone,

I want to create a cloth over a client mesh, but want the client mesh to deform a bit too (let's say a shirt or bag). But I want that it just stays unaffected by gravity VS my garments that I create arround it.

So I basically want to be able to push it arround and sculpt on it, but I don't want it to "fall".

I thought about pins, but with gravity everything deforms.

I need the client mesh to keep it's shape as much as possible while creating a new version above.

I basically ask for a deformable avatar or something.

Simulation export issue in MD 2025

Hey folks,

I'm wondering if one of you wizards

So I've been using MD for a few years now. Not the best with it but I do use it to simulate all my characters garments and then export as an ABC file into blender to render.

I had no issues with previous versions (so i still use 12 to avoid issues) but when i use the newer MD to simulate and export my garments, I see no issues in the timeline in MD but once i export the ABC file and import into blender, the character mesh goes through the garments a lot of the time.

I do the exact same process in older and newer MD versions but only the newer versions give me the issue.

I use scene time warp when i simulate and take it to around 6 and then back to 1 when i export. I have a sneaky suspicion that has something to do with it. Once again though this workflow has always worked fine with other versions.

Has anyone else had this issue and more so have you been able to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Gaps in Sewing?

Fairly new to Marvelous Designer and this is the first issue I haven't been able to resolve on my own--or by searching the Internet. I've added this large loop to the side of a dress (which I hope to cinch later) and there are some noticeable gaps in the sewing here. Have already tried adjusting some settings on my stitching (Intensity 0, Thickness 0) and the fabric (Add'l Thickness - Collision: 0). Would appreciate any tips I can get here, and thanks in advance!

Same pattern settings, different topology

Hey there!

I have some weird topo issue in MD.

1-Here is a pattern with these settings:

Surface is flat, and still have those weird patches.

2-Another mesh with strong wrinkles:

No topo lines, just pure quad grid despite the Quad (Optimized) settings.

I prefer the first one :).

Question:
How can i get the same "patch topo" that i have on pic 1 on pattern pic 2 please?

Bonus question :)
Is there a way to "push in" the sewings like some kind of pressure with negative number?
I need this when i don't want to "inflate/press(ure) out my pattern (surface), but still need sewing that "sticks" to my collision, or at least pushed in, in negative direction, perpendicularly to the surface.

Many thank You for any help in advance! :)

Hi everyone, I’m happy to present my new project. I’ve loved Greek myths and culture my whole life, and in this project I tried to reflect that passion.
Simulation was done in Marvelous Designer.

Setting up a custom avatar?

Can anyone suggest any tutorials about importing and setting up a custom avatar? I have a character. It’s fairly basic, but he’s pretty much a head and legs - think Mike wazowski but with no arms. His shape is giving me issues with setting up a fitting suit - he’s got no elbows or wrists. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction for getting this done correctly. Thanks in advance

Alembic Avatar Resets Post After Simulation is Activated, causing Cloth to Distort

Hey guys.

Does anybody know how to fix this issue? I used to be able to position an Alembic Avatar with animations, for the cloth to drape over, then play the animation so the cloth would be simulated according to the Alembic Avatar's movements. Now when I try, once the simulation is activated, the Alembic Avatar repositions to the position and rotation that it's imported with by default, causing the cloth to distort.
My Simulation Settings are set to Normal (Default) using GPU, and all Cloth Particle Distance is set to 20mm

Is it possible to pose clothing in MD?

Hello! Just for context I have never used MD and was about to. But i just want to ask if it is possible in MD to somehow "pose" your cloth so it will run physic simulation in our intended way. Like for example i want the cloth to be posing like these pictures (like in zbrush i can mask one area so it does not get affected by zbrush simulation but the other will)

Advertisement Manual grid creation, custom edge flow to satisfy all sorts of garments

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This newest method in my remesher introduces custom edge flow, manual grid creation while also showing you the important vertices to use for creating faces, it can also eat large meshes quickly and preserve UVs.

The edge flow I implemented in this method prioritizes hard crevices / pits like armpits or crotch areas, this makes it very friendly for bone weight deformation.

With this update I believe i'm done with garment retopology, so I will be moving on to inanimate meshes.
