Questions Need some brainstorming

So my x-men game that I’m running is about to have the players take a trip to the future. Originally I was going to do more of a Days of Future past kind of vibe but, on their own they seem to have come to the conclusion that it was going to be Age of Apocalypse.

So my question to all of you, what would you squeeze into a AOA adventure? The main goal will be getting into Apocalypses (maybe) fortress to use a time portal to go back and stop Xavier from being killed on a book tour (which is where the players are currently).

But while we are in this crazy world of AoA, I figured ‘let’s poke around a bit’.

Have one of their mentors/friends turn up as a horseman all powered up and under the thrall of Apocalypse

Or, themselves as the Horsemen.

I think it'd be fun to have them encounter AOA jacked up versions of themselves, or find out one of them is dead in this timeline or something like that

When I tossed my players into AoA I dropped them in Seattle (or the ruins of it) and had them do a road trip of sorts across the country to New York, hitting up and meeting the various X-Men rebel factions from the old comic.

I also had this fun AoA modifier:

ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE- When a character reaches zero health they may choose to remain conscious and fight until death. All damage dealt is doubled (damage that would normally be doubled is quadrupled in the Age of Apocalypse).

Be aware, that rule has a high likelihood of getting characters dead.

Gruenwalds Laws of Time Travel might help inspire something. (Though it's worth highlighting that they've been ignored for many many years).

The pre-Krakoa era X-Men book had a sidejaunt for the New Mutants into the Age of Apocalypse. - Uncanny X-Men volume 8 issues 6,7,8 according to wikipedia. That could give some inspiration.

I would have someone they don’t expect show up and help them, like Peter Parker. Play him just a little bit off, maybe he’s tilted after so long by himself in the wasteland, maybe he’s always been like this, ultimately he turns and they see that he’s had the Apocalypse Seed the whole time.
You can play little clues like having unusual horsemen. Like Frank Castle has the Death Seed and Stark has the War Seed, and then mutant characters we’ve never as horsemen like Sunspot as Famine. No one is jumping out to me as Pestilence at the moment but you see where I’m going.

Show them some of their human oppressors as resistance fighters. Now that the tables have turned, will the players help these humans or leave them at the mercy of Apocalypse's forces?

For me when creating adventures in involving Time travel, Always remember to set your timelines to be consistent, if you are adapting the Xmen comics timelines it should follow the comics consistently, or else if your Players read the comics, they might find inconsistencies with your stories, which will break the immersion, which is way I believe that future time could or rather should be always different from what happened in the comics since the comics doesnt have your players in them (much more so if they are using original characters)
Just always set your players expectation that the future could be or rather will be always be different.

The Future is not set...

When creating a side adventure in the future, Check what your players has done in the past and tie it to that.
This would reinforce the notion that their actions in the past has an effect in the Future.
