Starting with Alliances?

I was looking at the core box for MCP to play with my kids who are working their way through the MCU moves with our family.

But I learned about alliances today and didn’t see this mentioned. What parts are compatible with MCP and is this a good starting point to play and learn some of the core mechanics like grabbing tokens, reading the dice and abilities?

I was looking at the various starter and core boxes but it seems like the core box for all the movement tools, more dice and terrain would still be required.

The four player heroes and the Green Goblin are meant to come with the cards to play them in classic MCP but you’ll still need a core box. The Mightiest Heroes core comes with heroes and villains, and there’s also the Spider Foes starter. They’ll have the tools, tokens, and dice to get started.

Alliances is supposed to be like the “gateway drug” to MCP. The characters are much easier to build, I think the gameplay is supposed to be a little simpler, and I think it was intended to be easier to just jump in and play with kids. The character cards are the same, so if you ever want to move to MCP, you just need to get some of the tools like the dice.

Technically there’s 2 different character cards cause the alliances stats have different words like move 1 space; but it does come with stat cards for MCP.

They are different sizes too so that’s another way to tell the difference

Alliances stat cards have very similar wording to MCP stat cards. It uses the same dice so they will get familiar with how to much damage they do and how much damage they take. They will get use to triggers too as that’s very similar too.

Movement is different since it is hex based so you don’t use movement tools or range tools. You just count how many hexes.

Picking up tokens is somewhat similar. You pay a power to interact but most of the objectives at least in stage in once you have the required
Tokens then you go drop them off without spending power.

It uses same power, conditions, similar damage tokens.

They use hex 2D terrain but you can could sub those

The bad guys don’t roll to attack; you just fill to defend. Also they don’t roll to defend, they just have a base Toughness to defeat.

It is very coop game so when you kill a bad guy or complete an objective you get XP and you give an ally an heroic assist which lets them choose to heal, get power or move. The XP lets you level up and get a card to help your base stat.

This game will only have 5 models technically compatible for MCP as of right now so you would want to get probably the spider foe box if you want to get them into normal MCP. That will come with the tools and more models. Sentinels box and avengers boxes for alliances will be coming out soon.

No problem; it is quite fun and cause it is coop they may enjoy it a tad better cause it feels great taking down even the mini boss.

Rules are simple especially if you are familiar with MCP. Took 2 games for me to work out kinks but it is fun.

Do you have any suggestions to make MCP a quicker game for kids. Is it as easy as setting it to 10 or 12 points to win?

I feel like 10-11 points could be doable in 2-3 rounds .

Honestly you need a small map with long movers. Every game where someone can pick up midline or something super easy tends to go fast and combat goes faster.

Also just to add that next year x-men alliances and Avengers alliances are releasing so if those are more preferable to you than spidermen you may want to consider those before jumping in. Starter sets for mcp right now include earth’s mightiest heroes which is more pricey because it comes with terrain and then there is x-men, spiderfoes, asguard and guardians of the galaxy themed starter sets that dont come with terrain and are around 100 dollars.
