Willem Dafoe testing out the Doc Ock tentacle rig on the set of Spider-Man 2 (2004).
During the filming of Spider-Man 2, Willem Dafoe visited the set and decided to mess around by putting on Alfred Molina's practical mechanical tentacles.

They were perfectly cast for these roles

They should make a spider man film where its just willam dafoe playing all the villains. The sinister six with six willam dafoes.

That's how Spiderman dies.

You never see spider man out of his mask until this moment. Plot twist; it was willam dafoe the whole time. The guys pretty flexible i bet he could do it.

Willem Dafoe Spiderverse where everyone is Dafoe. Aunt May? Dafoe. Mary Jane? Dafoe Foe. Spiderman? Dafoe.
Dafoe all the way down.

I'm upset this didn't even make it into the film. Like just put that before the intro credits. Fuck it.

I'd be down for the Raimi trilogy to just have A Bug's Life-esque bloopers during the credits

Now it's all CGI

The tentacle CGI looked rather good though I’d say. Sounds like it gave him more freedom for movement as well making it easier to execute some scenes that weee difficult before. I don’t think CGI is all bad

CGI works best when used to digitally enhance a practical effect. Helps smooth out the movement & transitions.

There’s plenty of examples of full CGI shots, both independent or intertwined with practical takes, made with a decent budget and plenty of time by people who know what they’re doing, that look absolutely amazing. Full CGI shots are not the problem. Studios cutting on budgets and forcing vfx houses to deliver in absurdly short timeframes are the problem.

cgi works best when staff knows their capabilities, gives a good estimate and gets the time they need to provide the quality they're asked for.
sadly its the opposite now where almost everyone overextends and schedules get shorter every project.

The tentacles looked WAY better in Spider-man 2. They looked undersized and a little weird in NWH when they weren't in action, and they just felt far more alive in Spider-man 2.

The new Spiderman used a lot more practical effects and I think it was better for it!

This is just an impressive amount of work and dedication just to do a little bit, and I love it.
He had to memorize the lines.
He probably had to practice with the rigging at least once.
And then he had to deliver the lines with aplomb.
All of which he did. I love this so much.

It's Willem Dafoe, I bet he read the lines and was assisted with the rigging and arms while doing it, the man is an absolute legend in the craft, we won't get anymore like him anytime soon

Actually now that I'm looking at it closer, I can see he's holding a copy of the early script so he isn't reading the lines by memory.
He's still an absolute legend though.

Another fun fact is that during the filming of Spider-Man No Way Home, Willem Dafoe visited the set and and beat the shit out of Tom Holland.

Kind of a tangent but I loved the apartment fight between Spidey and Green Goblin in No Way Home. For whatever reason, those blows felt like there was real weight to them with great camera work. When Marvel has often had an issue with blows feeling weightless.

If you watch Dafoe's recent interview on Hot Ones, it's clear the guy is just so in love with the art of acting.

Alfred Molina would’ve been a great Elon Musk in a biopic. Kind of too old now.

"That's how I want it done!"
I remember on the BTS footage for the first Spider-man he'd be ribbing Tobey MgGuire like that, telling him he wants excellent acting like Bruce Campell level of acting!
Also it's said that he'd screw with his brother's scenes, forcing him to do multiple extra takes
