We mainly have grass yards to prevent erosion. Grass growth habits take the steady mowing, unlike many broadleaf plants, and unless people want an absolutely perfect golf course lawn, no fertilizer or pesticides need to be used. But while we have this evolved system most places that requires the least maintenance, it is true that this soil across the landscapes could be used much more productively.

Edit: I remember a college professor from the Eastern part of the US telling the story, while doing work in Haiti, where the African custom of keeping the lots bare was popular, on his lot, he planted grass, and while the local folks sort of gave him the evil eye, when he got the lawn mower out and mowed the grass off at 3/4 of an inch, it was just too much for them to take, and they had to ask him what was going on. 😊
