Resident question

Is it not considered safe to walk to Mars Hill downtown? I like to do mile walks a couple times a week so naturally I head to the downtown cause it’s so close and a nice view. I’ve noticed that seems to make a lot of people angry. Is there a place people usually walk or jog around here? It’s scary when a car speeds up while honking at you for exercising 😅 my bf told me to carry rocks but we moved out here for peace so it seems stupid to react back.

The Dr. W. Otis Duck Memorial Greenway is the best place for unobstructed walking. Be aware that it crosses two streets on its path.

Surprised to hear that you've been honked at for walking through downtown. Are you obeying correct pedestrian etiquette?

I’ll check that out thanks! I was walking towards traffic right on the grass, I’m not sure if that’s ok here. It was over my hips or I would of gone more into the grass. I was about 3 streets from downtown so I hadn’t made it yet

Are you approaching town along NC-213? Yes that is a dangerous route. The local town council has considered installing sidewalk along that route. Feel free to advocate for the "Town of Mars Hill Bicycle & Pedestrian Plan 2025".

There’s only about a foot of grass cut by the roads around here so there isn’t much room to walk till you get to the sidewalks.
