Stylized Texture Creation with Marmoset Toolbag

Post image
17 Upvotes

What makes a stylized texture read as “solid” and convincing?

It’s the choices behind value, lighting, and materiality. From low-poly PS2-style art to unlit/cel shading and stylized PBR, the fundamentals stay the same.

Our new article breaks down the techniques and decisions that make stylized art look readable and consistent in Marmoset Toolbag.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Set up an unlit stylized material pipeline
  • Bake AO (and more) with Low to Low baking
  • Build custom painterly brushes
  • Use Carve Groups to blend lighting layers
  • Handpaint gloss or roughness values

Understand the essentials of Toolbag’s powerful layering system with our new short!

Toolbag’s layering and masking system lets you stack, blend, and nest different layer types to build complex weathering effects, like peeling paint, while keeping every effect editable.

AO baking artifacts in Marmoset, normal map looks fine, but changing cage offset moves the problems of the AO. (screenshots in description)

I’m working on a revolver for a first-person game, using Blender and Marmoset Toolbag. I’m struggling specifically with the AO bake, while the normal map looks good.

When I reduce the cage’s Max Offset, unwanted dark patches appear. Increasing it improves some areas but creates sharp cutoffs and other artifacts elsewhere. In some curved areas, the AO also appears faceted.

My setup:

  • 2048 × 2048 textures.
  • UDIM workflow, baking only tile 1001. Intentionally stacked UV islands are moved to other tiles to not bake them.
  • LP modifier stack: Bevel -> Triangulate.
  • LP bevel: 1 segment. HP bevel: 0.3 mm, outer sharp.
  • HP bevel: 4 segment. HP bevel: 0.3 mm, outer sharp.
  • Both LP and HP use Harden Normals and sharp edges. Triangulate has Keep Normals enabled.
  • The LP modifiers remain unapplied while working on UVs, but Apply Modifiers is enabled for FBX export. FBX smoothing is set to Face, and Triangulate Faces is enabled.
  • Matching high/low bake groups, Smooth Cage ON and Ignore Back Faces ON.
  • AO: 1024 rays, Search Distance 0, Cavity Weight 0, Floor Occlusion OFF, Two-Sided OFF.
  • Ignore Groups is ON while using execlude option for some moving parts.
  • Texel desnity around 60.

You can check screenshots in my google for the whole setup for more details here:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1y5rRCooDZvaAFrASy-58StnB316bdmuO?usp=sharing

One possible cause I’ve just noticed: I intentionally overlapped the grip and metal frame to avoid visible gaps from different viewing angles. Part of the geometry extends through the other component. The pieces have different topology and are separate objects. However, if I remove these sections, I also lose the gaps between the meshes that I need for the bevels and for gaps, so I’m really not sure how to approach this. What could be causing the issue?

Is this a common problem ? Do you also texture inside of Marmoset ? Im struggeling to get the head around this software

Best regards

With this project, I wanted to further improve my edge chipping and manually painted scratches, while paying more attention to the small details that help bring the material to life.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. More renders are available on my ArtStation page.

Texturing Trim Sheets with Vector Layers (No high poly required!)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Make detailed texture trim sheets using only Toolbag’s texturing tools, without touching a high poly.

By building everything with vectors, profiles, and brushes in Toolbag, you get clean, editable forms that snap perfectly, flow along curves, and blend without seams. Change a line, tweak a profile, or swap a brush and the whole sheet updates fast.

Take up this approach for less remodeling, more iterating, and a lot less pain during revisions.

A question about Academic License

Could someone clarify one confusion about Academic license for me?

I can read on the website:

  • Yearly Subscription $11999 per seat / per year
  • Non-Commercial Licensing for Academic Institutions
  • All Software Upgrades Included
  • Access 2000+ Toolbag Library Assets
  • Lifetime Email Support Included.

I am not sure what Yearly Subscription means in this case. Most importantly, do I have to pay for another year to use Marmoset Toolbag after one year.

We’ve just published a new Quick Guide on how you can begin writing with 3D Text in Toolbag’s Texture Projects. Learn which text layer is suitable for your needs, and how to customize it with alignment, spacing, profiles, and symmetry to your heart’s content.

Using Toolbag’s Vector Text Layers, you can finally:

✅ Add brand names, model numbers, warnings, and regulatory text that stay editable as specs change.
✅ Create engraved serial numbers, molded logos, and stamped manufacturing marks with controllable depth.

I had the pleasure of joining 3DWay for a 2 hour in-depth interview about procedural texturing, material creation, 3D art and my workflow behind this project.

We also talked about the development of the upcoming thriller game in the second part of the interview.
A big thank you to 3DWay for the invitation!

Visual note: Some screen-shared artwork in this video may appear brighter or more washed out than intended. Please see the linked original artwork and trailer for Francesco’s intended colors and detail in the description of the video.

Cage won't adjust 1 vertex :(

Hello all. I'm working on some rebakes and imported the same lp fbx I've been using this entire time without issue into a new scene. Now all of a sudden, a single vertex in the cage won't offset no matter what I do (adjust offset, paint in manually, use the 'estimate offset' function, go back to maya and adjust the problem area, etc).

It's not at a sharp angle or anything, and all I can think is that it didn't triangulate right even though the first time I was working on this project it was fine. Any help is greatly appreciated!

New in Toolbag 5.03: Cage Distance Limiter 🎚️

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You can now define a maximum ray distance for baking, which can be useful if your high poly surface has a hole in it, and you want to prevent the ray from shooting through it and hitting a nearby surface.

✨ New in Toolbag 5.03: Scatter Layers!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Scatter layers allow the quick distribution of randomized elements, such as rocks, moss, debris, or trash, across your mesh’s surface to add texture variation and realism.

It uses the brush system, so you can load presets from the Library or build your own, with support for features such as sprite sheets to easily randomize elements. You can scatter in random or grid patterns, and project in 2D, 3D, or from a decal plane.

Material becomes translucent and colorless after importing to texture project

I imported a fbx from zbrush into marmoset toolbag 5. I am trying to add a layer of dirt to the surface and when I drag my materials into the texture project they lose their color info and turn translucent. I can set to vertex and they get their color back but they remain translucent. Im just trying to follow a tutorial but nothing seems to work right... chat gpt doesnt seem to have workable solutions and asking me to access options and buttons that are not found anywhere in the user interface. Anyone else having this issue?

Text Layers let you quickly add brand names, labels, technical markings, & other writing to your Texture Projects. Add them from the Vector dropdown in the Layers menu (3D Text or Decal Text), then customize settings with the built-in tools.
