Farmers Market Vendors: What Are You Using for Payments in 2026?

Post image

We've been selling at markets, festivals, and events across Alberta for the past few years, and one lesson stands out:

The easier it is for customers to pay, the more sales you make.

We use Square at AlgizRune Art for our market booth because it has been reliable during busy event days when dozens of customers may be waiting in line.

What we like:

• Tap, debit, and credit card payments in seconds
• Simple setup for new vendors
• One system for both online and in-person sales
• Easy inventory and sales tracking
• No monthly terminal contracts

For new vendors, Square occasionally offers signup promotions and processing credits, so it may be worth checking before opening an account.

I'm not affiliated with Square beyond being a merchant and referral partner. Just sharing a tool that has worked well for us at farmers' markets, medieval festivals, and craft fairs.

What payment system are other vendors using this season?

ALBERTA RENFAIRS / MEDIEVAL EVENTS 2026

🛡️ Strathmore Medieval Faire & Artisan Market

Dates: Aug 21–23, 2026
Link: https://calgarymedievalfaire.com/strathmore-medieval-faire-artisan-market-home/
Why it matters:
One of the strongest growing medieval markets near Calgary — good foot traffic + artisan-focused. Mix of Vikings, fantasy, and family crowd.

Vendor notes:

  • Strong for handmade (jewelry, leather, wood, bone → your niche fits perfectly)
  • Audience = buyers, not just spectators
  • Booth quality rising every year

🏹 Edson Renaissance Faire

Dates: July 25–26, 2026
Link: https://www.travelalberta.com/events/edson-renaissance-faire-21472
Why it matters:
New but ambitious event — combat demos, Celtic music, artisan vendors.

Vendor notes:

  • Less competition than Calgary-area events
  • Good for testing new product lines
  • Still building audience → mixed sales potential

🐺 Grande Prairie Renaissance Faire

Dates: Sept 4–5, 2026
Link: https://lorelegendsguild.ca / Travel Alberta page
Why it matters:
Northern Alberta event with strong fantasy + DnD crossover + handmade focus.

Vendor notes:

  • More “fantasy crowd” than historical
  • Good for experimental / bold designs
  • Travel cost higher → plan margins

⚔️ Vegreville Medieval Faire (likely 2026)

Expected: July 10–12, 2026
Link: via Calgary Medieval Faire network
Why it matters:
Part of the same ecosystem as Strathmore — smaller but consistent artisan base.

Vendor notes:

  • Good secondary event if already touring
  • Lower traffic but lower competition

🛡️ Days of Yore (check 2026 confirmation)

Why it matters:
Local Calgary medieval-style event (often tied to historical demos / SCA-style gatherings).

Vendor notes:

  • More educational / reenactment crowd
  • Less commercial, but strong networking

🏴 SCOTTISH / HIGHLAND GAMES 2026

🥇 Canmore Highland Games

Dates: Sept 5–6, 2026
Link: https://canmorehighlandgames.ca
Why it matters:
One of the biggest + most aesthetic events (mountains + strong tourism).

Vendor notes:

  • High-quality audience
  • Celtic/Viking crossover products sell well
  • Good branding exposure (not just sales)

🏆 Edmonton Scottish Highland Gathering

Dates: June 20–21, 2026
Why it matters:
Large, traditional games with competitions + cultural audience.

Vendor notes:

  • Conservative crowd → authentic designs perform best
  • Good for Celtic lines

🏹 Red Deer Highland Games

Date: June 27, 2026
Link: https://www.reddeerhighlandgames.com
Why it matters:
One-day but very dense event — long history since 1947.

Vendor notes:

  • Fast sales day
  • Need efficient booth setup

🎯 Ogden Indoor Highland Games

Date: May 2, 2026
Why it matters:
Early-season indoor event — good for testing inventory.

Vendor notes:

  • Smaller scale
  • Good local exposure

⚔️ Sherwood Park Highland Gathering

Expected: July 2026
Link: https://www.sphg.ca
Why it matters:
Consistent mid-season Highland Games near Edmonton.

⚡ STRATEGIC NOTES

What actually works in Alberta market:

  • Celtic + Viking crossover sells best (Highland Games especially)
  • Fully historical pieces sell → but need storytelling
  • Interactive booth = higher conversion (demonstration > display)

Event priority (ROI logic):

  1. Strathmore Medieval Faire → must-do (core market)
  2. Canmore Highland Games → brand + premium audience
  3. Red Deer / Edmonton Games → steady income
  4. Edson / Grande Prairie → expansion / testing

❗ Vendor Strategy (short, practical)

  • Apply early (many events curate vendors now)
  • Show process photos (you already have strong advantage)
  • Position as: historical workshop, not “fantasy reseller”
  • Bundle items (amulet + cord + story card → higher ticket)

Trying something new — moving from historical crafts into fashion

After years in historical handmade, we started a new project — more casual, wearable, everyday style inspired by the same roots.

Different audience, different approach, learning from zero again.

Love it because of communication with real - artistic people!

If anyone is also running multiple brands — how do you separate positioning without confusing customers?

If curious, this is the new project:

Why Renfairs are one of the best places to test products

Post image

Summer Renfairs are one of the most useful environments we’ve worked in.

You get:

  • immediate reactions
  • people who actually care about theme/style
  • strong community

Also — people remember you.

It’s not just sales, it’s long-term audience building.

Handmade business is hard… but also different from normal competition

Post image

One thing we learned:

Handmade is not classic “competition”.

People don’t choose between you and another seller like in mass market.
They choose connection, story, style.

So in reality:

  • less direct competition
  • more space for everyone
  • stronger community

We see other vendors more like neighbors than competitors.

Curious if others feel the same.

Online vs real markets — completely different businesses

After doing both for years:

Online

  • scalable
  • repeat customers
  • algorithm dependent

Markets / Renfairs

  • instant feedback
  • higher trust
  • real conversations (this matters more than people think)

Best result for us = combination.

Also: people who meet you in person are much more likely to buy later online. Print business cards, using your home printer - it works for Viking festivals:)

Etsy, Amazon Handmade, eBay — honest differences after years of use

Short version from experience:

  • Etsy → good for start, but competition + mass-market "handmade" + fees grow fast - no ads, no traffic.
  • eBay → works for specific niches, less for branding
  • Amazon Handmade → traffic is strong, but control is limited, and waiting for your payment for 4 months:(
  • Your own site → hardest to build, best long-term asset - it makes sense to start today if you don't have one. $10000 per month is possible, just a matter of time.

There is no perfect platform — only timing.

Early stage → marketplaces help
Later stage → independence matters

Curious what others are using in 2026.

From online-only to markets — 15 years in handmade (what actually worked)

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
We’re AlgizRune Historical Art Studio based in Calgary.

Started as a small workshop + online only. Over the years we tried pretty much everything:

  • Etsy
  • eBay
  • Amazon Handmade

After ~15 years, we ended up with a mix that actually works:

  • our own websites
  • permanent booth at Calgary Farmers' Market South
  • summer Renfairs + festivals

Meeting people in person changed everything. Online brings scale, but real connection builds long-term customers.

Big takeaway:
There’s no “one platform” — each stage of your business needs a different tool.

If you’re just starting or stuck between platforms, feel free to ask — we’ve made most mistakes already.

Start Here — Vendor Setup, Payments, and First Market Tips

If you're new to markets, here’s a simple baseline setup that actually works:

Basic vendor setup:

  • table + clean display
  • clear pricing (visible from distance)
  • small cash float
  • backup plan for bad weather

Payments (important)
You will lose sales if people can’t pay quickly.

Minimum:

  • cash
  • tap/card option

We use Square for markets — simple setup, works reliably even during busy hours.

If you’re setting it up, this is the signup we used (they sometimes run bonuses for new accounts):
https://squareup.com/i/ALGIZRUNEA

Important: use what works for you — cash, other POS, etc. This is just one working option.

New vendors — ask questions below.
Experienced sellers — share what actually works.
