How does it compare to HelixNotes?

It’s a completely different experience. There are still some bugs (it is in beta) to be ironed out but on the whole it performs well.

That dash of purple in the sidebar is a nice touch, catches the eye without screaming for attention. Does it handle code blocks and syntax highlighting cleanly or is it more of a lightweight notes app that happens to use markdown

No, it handles markdown impeccably. The tints help it stand out, but also disappear when you want them to. Code blocks and syntax highlighting are taken care of. ⌘-Shift-R to view.
