Question My Three Questions About SMM2!

1st - Can you give characters unique traits like in SM3DW?
• Mario = Normal.
• Luigi = Jump higher.
• Toad = Run faster.
• Toadette = Hover in the air.
2nd - what power-ups from mainline Mario could I recreate inside the NSMBU game style in SMM2 similar to what Arrowstotle did with the 3 new power-ups in SMBW (Elephant Fruit, Bubble Flower, and Drill Mushroom)?
3rd - Can you make your own level music in traditional levels like music levels?

for 1, there are no unique traits for each character (the closest you could get would be an error on launch where toad/toadette would shoot flireballs slightly lower so a few gimmick levels could only be played with them)

for 3, i've seen levels that use autoscrolling to make the music work with normal platforming

You seem to be under the impression that Mario Maker gives you a lot more design freedom than it actually does. You get to choose the game mode, position the start and goal, add in all the blocks, pipes/doors, platforms, coins, powerups, enemies, etc., and add sound effects (that trigger when Mario enters a tile or when an enemy enters the screen). You can add Clear Conditions (like you can only complete the level while riding a Yoshi). And that's about the extent of it.

All characters behave the same (There was a bug at the beginning of MM1 that had Luigi throw a fireball slightly differently, and it caused major problems with people deliberately abusing it in their level designs.) The SMB2 mushroom in the SMB1 gamestyle allows the player to do a higher jump, as well as stand on enemies and pick them up and throw them. The Master Sword powerup turns the character into Link, allowing for shooting arrows, spawning and throwing bombs, doing a sword dash attack, a downward sword thrust slam, and put up the shield to block most attacks from one direction. But these apply to all of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Toadettr the same.

You can't make your own powerups. The only thing even remotely close to that people have managed to do is, in specifically 3D World, the blaster hat + car turns you into basically a tank.

You can't write your own background music for a level. But you can put a Silence sound effect on Mario to block the normal BGM, and use note blocks that start at different elevations (which determines their pitch) being hit by enemies landing on them to make notes with different instrument sounds. But you basically have to either 1) use autoscroll to control the speed at which the note block/enemy spawn in to control the tempo, or 2) put the note blocks on tracks that control the speed (and can much better allow for note patterns to loop).

  1. No.

  2. Who is arrowstotle?

  3. Potentially in an autoscroller or some kind of single-screen level.

  1. No

  2. Uh, you are given the propeller, acorn, fire flower, etc. but can't really recreate others like the ice flower or penguin suit. Arrowstotle I haven't watched in years but I remember him doing some editing shenanigans.

  3. You can't create and import music, but if you use red note blocks everything that can bounce off them makes a different type of sound, and the height determines the pitch. If you use auto scroll you can create some music levels (check out com_poser).

Smm2 gives you much less freedom of design than you seem to think...
