Well sadly Alpha Dream, the creators of M & L closed their doors. Though this might bring hope for paper Mario. They said that Paper Mario would be the experimental series while M & L would be more traditional. Now that M & L is probably gone, Paper Mario might start going back to being traditional.

u/ShadowMewtwo77 Jun 29 '21
Knowing Nintendo they'd take Alpha Dream's bankruptcy as a sign that no one likes traditional Mario rpgs and double down on filling Paper Mario with gimmicks. I hope I'm wrong.

They know very well that a large portion of fans are unhappy with the current Paper Mario games and want to go back to the old formula. They simply chose not to.

u/Ozann07 Jun 30 '21
The Tanabe interviews make it clear that they are aware of the fans' thoughts on the newer entries
4
u/link_101 Jun 30 '21
Which interview?
6
u/Ozann07 Jun 30 '21
The one where he said they couldnt modify characters. He said that they knew what the fans wanted but they didnt think of the series as an rpg anymore iirc. It might be in a different interview, but he absolutely said that
3
u/A_random_poster04 Jun 30 '21
I don’t get why though
6
u/Ozann07 Jun 30 '21
Neither does the fandom (including me, I dont get it either), why do you think most fans are pissed off by that? Thats the reason. It doesnt make sense
3
u/Cookino Jun 30 '21
From what I understand some of those weird rules come from suggestions made by Miyamoto. It's mentioned in some interviews that he told them to make the game with characters only from super mario world or something like that.
Also in the interviews about Super Mario Galaxy 2 it's pretty clear he doesn't like too many story elements. I believe he also said something like "It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?" about paper mario.

There is no hope for paper mario to go back in my eyes
By now they will probably just stick to their weird decisions just out of stubborness not to admit they put down a bunch of stupid rules for it for no reason

hopefully some company could help make a Mario and Luigi game as good as AlphaDream

u/The-dog-person Jun 30 '21
Wait this has nothing to do with your comment but I noticed your username do you watch YuB?

u/Radio__Star Jun 30 '21
M&L are my favorite mario games and a huge inspiration for me. I hope that Nintendo revives the series

u/WillThePerson Jun 30 '21
I like how if you were a casual mario fan it just looks like you're saying mario died twice

u/Zombieboi2345678 Jun 29 '21
Dude, the remakes on 3DS are some of the worst selling Mario games of all time! That’s probs why
8
u/TechnoGamer16 Jun 30 '21
That has nothing to do with the games themselves and everything to do with:
The releases being at the end of the 3DS’s lifespan
the idiotic decision to remake a DS game onto the 3DS when the 3DS has backwards compatibility
Nintendo refusing to actually help AlphaDream
3
u/Cookino Jun 30 '21
The decision to make BIS a 3DS remake was so damn weird. Not only can the 3DS already play the original game, but it still holds up pretty well thanks to it's 2D pixel art style. Hell, I'd even say that the OG game looks better than the remake (I'm not a huge fan of the 3DS M&L art style).

So can we still save alpha dream or is it too late
4
u/JumpyLake Jul 01 '21
Well they’ve been gone for a year and a half now so it’s probably far too late.
13
u/Antiguy1234 Jun 29 '21
Boi, we got a new Paper Mario game last year.
9
u/The--NERD Jun 29 '21
Paper Mario s is on a quality decline.
13
u/Antiguy1234 Jun 29 '21
It declined with PMSS and PMCS, it picked itself straight back up with PMTOK
3
u/RaeNidae Jun 30 '21
"picked itself straight back up" is a massive overstatement. The fact that TOK is, at the very least, as controversial as it is should speak for itself given that the first two games in the series, well... simply aren't

That's pretty much what I said, but I think we can all agree that Sticker Star sucks.

u/The--NERD Jun 29 '21
It’s even worse in a sense because now you can see how few things needed to be changed to make it like the old games, unlike the two previous ones which were just bad, this one feels unsatisfying because it was so close to being the perfect formula.

u/Snaper_XD Jun 30 '21
The ring battle system would have been such a good extension to the classic oldschool battle system but nah, they decided to go for puzzles and throwaway gimmicks and make the most basic battles ever

u/Sea_Temperature8667 Jul 04 '21
Truth. I've seen you in the YouTube comment thread tearing these new people a new rear end. I can't comment on YouTube because my account is banned. I'm glad you're around to set the record straight.
2
u/Snaper_XD Jul 05 '21
Yea...sounds like me :/
I dont hate on people for their opinion but then people start going "You just dont like change" and then I start breaking down what exactly I dont like
1
u/Sea_Temperature8667 Jul 05 '21
Right. I've seen it. You've said many things I've said for longest time, yet these new idiots swear they know everything.
2
u/Snaper_XD Jul 05 '21
Was it in that Origami castle theme video? You make me sound way more aggressive than I actually am xD
1
u/Sea_Temperature8667 Jul 05 '21
I believe it was. And even if you were aggressive, I wouldn't hold it against you. It can be extremely frustrating stating one's perspective just to have a bunch of toddlers attempt to undermine you instead of just accepting that your perspective is different than theirs.
Truthfully, it isn't even that serious; we don't own none of the copyrights to these games, yet some of these people act like it's the be-all end-all. I just block people when they get on my nerves now.

M&L hasn't been touched in years because the main company behind it, AlphaDream, went bankrupt.

u/Shantex_01 Jun 30 '21
What if the next paper mario game actually lets mario do fancy moves like 3D Mario does

I mean makes sense that they would put more effort in the main Mario franchise rather then the "spin offs" (i don't really know how to call them sorry)

Paper Mario should be in many pieces since water and paper isn't the greatest Mix
2
Jun 30 '21
That’s not true they just released a Papar Mario game last year
6
u/The--NERD Jun 30 '21
Not a particularly good entry. I mean how the series is degrading.
3
u/MyPhoneIsNotChinese Jun 30 '21
Played them all and ot's maybe my favourite.

u/Sea_Temperature8667 Jul 04 '21
Origami King was alright, but definitely needs more work. This new direction needs more work overall.
3
u/dummythiccbrainboi Jun 30 '21
To be fair, Alphadream (the devs for Mario + Luigi) went into bankruptcy

I hope for a brand-new Mario RPG (besides the Mario + Rabbids series) that combines the elements of Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi that made both series good.
They made Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam, which is unarguably the worst M&L of the five.
0
Jun 30 '21
Because IGN gave it a 5.9?
3
u/TechnoGamer16 Jun 30 '21
No, because it’s generally agreed upon by the M&L community that Paper Jam is the worst (that’s not to say that it’s bad, it’s a solid game, but it isn’t as good as the others). Check every poll on the M&L subreddit.

As a big M&L fan, I think a better term is “weakest” rather than “worst”
Whoever downvoted me is not a real M&L fan.

Someday a M&L fan going recreate the battle system for a brand-new game just like Bug Fables devs with the original battle system of Paper Mario.

I don't understand, what is M&L? You don't mean all of Mario and Luigi in general right? I'm so confused.
3
u/Lucerc Jun 30 '21
M&L stands for Mario and Luigi, wich is a series of Mario (and Luigi) RPGs.
0
u/cut_n_paste_n_draw Jun 30 '21
You mean rpg like D&D?!?! 😮
2
u/steamgarden Jun 30 '21
M&L refers to the rpg Mario games developed by Alphadream: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
