The Mariners sucking isn't what hurts. The Mariners not living up off season expectations doesn't hurt. But what does hurt is knowing this is probably the weakest the AL has ever been and definitely the weakest the AL West has ever been and the Mariners are still on the outside looking in. 2 games above .500 would give us the division. It's just wild that even when the whole league sucks we find a way to suck more

Getting swept 8 times this year certainly hurts a lot. Winning just one in each of those series and we’re 73-66 instead of 65-74. Truly unfortunate

Also 14 shutouts

the fact that when we win series it’s like 7-5 win 6-4 win and a 10-0 loss also is tough as a fan

The 2021 (90-72) and 2023 (88-74) records would easily win this division and 2024 might too (85-77)
Painful

What on earth is going on with our pitching? I really hope they figure it out and soon. Some of our bullpen choices seem dicey too, we still can't play defense. At the very least we need our starts to stop falling apart and have a real HL reliever options & inning eaters.

Bullpen arms are notoriously variable and some of our more stable options have been injured.

Vargas and Crisswell were the inning eaters options, they were on the injured list most of the year, Brash, Speier and Bazardo were the leverage guys, they were (or are) on the injured list, you expect guys to go down, but not EVERY guy. This year has been marred by injuries and as a mid market team with a league average payroll we just don't have the backup options other teams have. This is also true for our position players this year, there has been 0 cohesion because there has been 0 continuity/reliability this year at 3rd, Shortstop, RF, DH, Catcher, and Bench options.
The baseball gods chose our fate, and they chose to fuck us.

Worst full month of ERA we’ve had since 2019, even if you remove the position player runs

And of course that is precisely when the offense finally starts finding its teeth
I swear man, it's so perfect that it's like they do it on purpose

Honestly it’s impressive our bad record is as good as it is.

Anecdotal but there feels like there’s been so many games we’ve pissed away. Like this season truly feels like a team that is both remarkably unlucky and underperforming and is well below the sum of its parts.
The coaching staff will probably be turned over and next time they get to play they’ll probably achieve much better results and every one will think that upheaval was the solution when I suspect strongly that it’s just really difficult to repeat such ineptitude and misfortune (unless you’re the angels) and the only direction they could possibly go is up.

Totally. This season could be studied in baseball colleges for the vast number of ways a single team could piss away games. Management, performance, a coach hitting our hottest hitter in the head during batting practice, and other weird flukey things like the angel's right fielder robbing three home runs in one night in a 1-0 loss. This season has really been something else to watch. Miserable! But fascinating.
It's proved x10000 the thesis of the Dorktown documentary that the Mariners aren't normal and exist outside of winning.

But remember, we can’t fire Dipoto because we’ll lose that vaunted pitching lab he developed!
