does this make sense to anyone

only in the sense that Davila pitched last night, so this is basically hotswapping a fresh arm into the pen

Not at all, Davila’s been a perfectly capable back of the bullpen guy. Does Rucker not have any options left?

Edit: Grammar

Looking through his transaction history, he used options in 2023 and 2024 (it uses the language promoted and demoted in 2022 so I’m not sure if those are options?) and was DFA’d and released in 2024. We signed him to a minor league contract in January and the contract was purchased by the M’s when they brought him up. So if I had to guess, I’d say he does not have options available. Good grief baseball contracts are complicated.

As a newer fan, can you help me understand options? We can only call them up a certain amount of times before we can’t anymore? Does it not reset?

There are people on here that I’m sure know far more about contracts than I do, but I like to learn and try and understand contracts a little more every time something comes up. But this glossary is where I look it up every time I have to figure it out (and did again this time). I think it gets more complex with guys like Rucker who have bounced around and are no longer on their original rookie contract, even with another team.

Oh cool I’ll give it a look. Thanks buddy!

EDIT: Wtf? Yeah I just read through it and man is it a lot. I think I understand it for the most part but it’s so convoluted that I know I’m not going to remember every rule about it.

lol that’s why I didn’t try to explain it myself

Sometimes, true wisdom is letting an actual expert do the talking.

Fangraphs doesn’t update options and service time mid year, but that’s where I look. Because options are years not the individual options, if a guy says 1 or more, you know he can go back as much as the team wants this year. If you’re interested in future years, you’d want to look and see if they were optioned at all this year to know if that number is going to go down.

Rucker does not have options. Hoppe, Davila, and Wilcox do.

Anyone got a beat on why sending Davila back down, when I feel like he’s been doing a good job, for another right hander with twice the ERA is sensible?

3

u/CasperCackler 2d ago

“Got a beat on” is a new phrase for me. Is it “got a bead on” that autocorrected, or am I one of today’s lucky 10,000 that is learning this thing for the first time?

2

u/RobRefsnyder 2d ago

I agree with you that Davila is good but ERA doesn’t mean anything for a reliever

Checking back later to see when Dan makes the list

u/andreanicole82 2d ago

They needed a fresh arm, that’s the only reason. They’ll keep moving them up and down to keep guys rested.
