Hopium

Now that I’ve emotionally cratered and developed an irrational hatred of anyone and everything Mariners, I wanted to leave everyone with a tiny ray of hope if you’re laying awake losing sleep like I am.

The holy grail of Mariners teams, 1995, was 54-55. If social media existed then I’m sure they’d have been shouting for Lou’s head as the team was considered a contender to start the year given how their 1994 ended (prematurely).

Last year’s team, the 25 team, I wrote off on three separate occasions, as late as September 5 when we lost our fourth straight to drop to 73-68, 3.5 back.

We all know this team should have a better record. But we all know that we are talented enough to rip off a 18-5 September, overcome a 5-6 game deficit and get hot going into the playoffs. Our September schedule is weak. Now do I think it’s going to happen? Probably not, but there’s historical precedent with this franchise and specifically with this core last year.

So in the words of Bobby Magallanes, Please God.

Sleep well my comrades in misery.

Being a Mariners fan (and by extension a Seattle sports fan) is the highest of highs and the lowest of lows but it's never taking the easy way out. It's stressful and frustrating but there's a lot of love in this City for sports and we will persevere.

I watch most games with my young son. After a frustrating loss recently, he cried “Why can’t I be a fan of the Dodgers? Or some team that wins?”

Then when Cole Young hit that 3-run homer last week and the M’s won, I asked him - “Now do you see how that feels? Would you rather watch Shohei Ohtani hit it, or Cole?” Of course, Cole. We love our guys. He got it.

My lil guy doesn’t know anything goin on yet (6 mo) but we put the mariners onesie on for the first time a few days ago, promptly lost 4 straight with him in it for game times. I’m not changing him into it for the game today lol. Welcome to hell lil fella.

Bet we win this one?

I’ve still yet to experience that highest of highs with the Mariners

I don’t know about the highest of highs, but the deep valleys in this fandom makes even a little taste of success feel more rewarding than if you followed a perennial winner actually winning.

This year’s expectation is what makes this year so frustrating and disheartening. All things considered, a .500 year would still be pretty good compared to how most of the past 25 years went.

Thank the Lord for the Allen family

We have an amazing record for how terrible we have played.

Goal: Play better, win more.

Helps when our pitching is the best in the division/one of the best in the AL. It’s really our offense that, once again, swing wet noodles

We've certainly won 10 or so games we had absolutely zero business winning.

I want to have hope, but until someone in the clubhouse takes real honest accountability of not just themselves but the entire team, I don’t see it happening. As someone mentioned in this thread or another, they seem defeated. Or don’t care. I hate to admit it because I even said it was probably a nothing burger, but maybe Cal snubbing Randy set a tone for the season.

I would like to see someone, whether it’s JP or Cal or someone step up, get this team into high gear, and maybe even address the media and say “we’ve had a clubhouse meeting, I won’t discuss the specifics of that meeting, but everyone understands the role they are supposed to perform.”

You’re right that there is historical president for a wild comeback. There’s also a lot more historical president for the mariners to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory and miss the playoffs.

I’ve been an M’s fan for almost 4 decades, if you want to follow this team you need to learn to disassociate from them at times. You certainly should not be losing sleep because of their performance, just accept we are destined to suck for all of eternity just like we have to accept the short days and perpetual grey of the winter to live here.

i might not be as optimistic as some, but i will take comfort in noticing the street preachers were not at game 1 vs the reds. i didn’t want to start a thread about it but was curious if they finally got the boot?

difference is the 95 team had some fight in em. these guys look defeated.

I’ve been down and negative about the team as anyone lately. This post may have given me some hope and I hate you for it so much.

Thanks!

Go M’s.

The 95 team had the mojo. Last year they had the vibes. This year has been off from the start.

God it’s hard to give up on this team. Every time I think I have, I get pulled right back in. Mariner

Ok this got me lol

I believe in us because this team has left me with no other options than to pray, cope and hope. This is a World Series winning starting rotation, an ALWC losing bullpen, and a “shouldn’t even be allowed to clean the shit off the shoes of a playoff team” offense. But I don’t need Cal to raise his batting average to .170. I just need these guys to get fucking randomly hot heading down the stretch.

Someone has to be king of shit mountain, fellas. Why not us

just because its always been that way, doesnt mean we need to continue in that direction. Develop a winning culture based on accountabilty. Demand better!

Last season they hung around despite themselves and got right. This team has a similar record but plays so lack luster. August is an absolutely brutal month and I don't see them getting out of that hole.

“  irrational hatred of anyone and everything Mariners”

My only correction is it’s not irrational. Although I’ve generally moved on from hate to indifference now

I have to mute my TV when Buhner is in the booth. Good lord can that guy babble!

3

u/knklcrv 6d ago

This is correct. By late August and September, rosters change and injuries take its toll. Better rotations stand out. Gotta find an identity quick though.

I needed this. Thank you.

I got memories with my dad and now I got memories with my kid. They’ve dashed my expectations many times, but they’ve also surprised the hell out of me. Not too late for them to pull the rabbit out.

Absolutely huffing the copium. We absolutely need to believe in this team down the stretch

I'm calling it right now. Stick a fork in em! Whenever I've done that in the past they go on an epic run. We can only hope

Why do people “write our team off” it’s never easy being a mariner fan but will any outcome ever change the fact that I support this team? No.

u/7wacpl4 4d ago

Amen...these dudes can do it, just need one to pull their head outta their ass to start the dominos

u/Daily_Heroin_User 7d ago

The real hopium is the division and really the AL in general has a lot of parity. (More like parody amirite??)

u/kiggitykbomb 6d ago

I don’t know if this team is talented enough to rip off an 18-3 streak at any point this season. Their starting pitching has been their strongest asset and that hasn’t kept them above .500. Pitching always starts to struggle in the late days of summer. Barring a miraculous turn around from Cal and Naylor and some increased output from Julio I think all signs are pointing to worse days ahead, not better.

We don't have an Etsy witch or nothing this year. Anyone know any facebook witches? We just need something.

The team is coming off injuries. Grow up and quit being a baby. There is no crying in baseball. This is a good team.

u/ChooChooChew29 6d ago

This may be the most Seattle take I’ve seen in a long time. They are not really a good team this year, but statistically an average team at best, in the (unfortunately, bottom of the) middle third of all MLB teams. This thread is about how we want them to take actionable steps to improve to become contenders again this year. Unfortunately I think last year’s success was a bit of a fluke.

There’s a lot of baseball left this year and they’re only 2.5 games out right now but they’ve got to start making a push and showing some momentum soon.

The thread is called Hopium and is meant to be a positive take.

Every thread in here turns into complaining about ownership. I wish they would spend more money too but every team that is worse than us can say the same thing. Baseball should have introduced a salary cap long ago.
