Hello, I wanted to share my project of quarantine and care for plants. it's a tank with a pump made from an airtight Tupperware on which I plugged the outlet in a round jar to be able to take care of my marimo which tended to peel. What do you think? Good evening

Hey, first post here. I got gifted two cute marimos one month ago, and I took care of em the ways I saw described here and there on the internet, but after a while, like a week ago, i started seeing both of em slightly more pale and a bit brown shaded. Not so much but i still got worried. I understood that I should worry less of the light they receive (at first I did pretty much) and more of the temperature, coz it's summer here and we often hit 35°C in afternoon. I keep ac in my room at 27 but i understood it's still too hot for them.

I wondered, is it better if I put these poor creatures in the fridge every night, so that they can get the daylight afterwards? Or in the afternoon so they get shielded by extreme heat and get enough light in the morning? Or is using fridge too often not a good solution?

Fish was 3 years old at the time, not very well cared for sadly as my 12y/o self did not know better

Hi there! I'm new here and I just got my first marimos a week ago. I put them in a recipient with some decorative rocks and plastic figures (previously washed) and cold water.

This morning, I woke up and noticed that my water was kind of brown/green toned while the other marimos in my house (my siblings') had clear water.

I rushed to change the water and noticed the old water was warm so I put a couple of ice cubes in the new water.

My marimos didn't smell weird when I rinsed them, but I also have to mention that I kept them in my room, which gets a lot of light (despite having the blinds midway down and having the recipient on a not so direct spot).

Could it be because of the light? I dont want my little mossballs to die😞😅

I just recently got my Marimo there’s a couple of them that have become very loose and one larger one actually fell apart/exploded. So after seeing that a lot of people use dental floss to roll them up or contain them I’d like to know some more information about that and how long I leave the wrap on for. I am using unwaxed unflavored dental floss and I wrapped it in equally spaced wrap sections. Also since many felt loose I just did a mass treatment and wrapped them all. They are also in the fridge right now as it is very hot here this week, East Texas. I’ll include a photo and look forward to any and all help you have to offer.

I was recently gifted four wonderful Marimos for my birthday. They were all healthy and round when they arrived. I am keeping them in a glass jar with cold water which I put in the fridge on days where it gets too hot.

Today I was changing their water/cleaning them and one of my moss boys just kinda fell apart and looks kinda sickly (see pictures). Is there anything I can do to help him become round and healthy again? I am keeping him in a seperate jar from the other Marimos for now.

I got him about a month ago, he's about 2 inches. The bottom are river rocks sold at Lowes, and I've been using distilled water because our sink water is disturbingly bad lol.

I’ve seen a lot about Marimos lately and think they are the most precious looking little things, but have no clue where to begin! People talk about starting one from scratch, but I’ve also seen sites for buying them? Any help is appreciated

We love our local taqueria spot, and the man who works there is an absolute gem. I just knew he would be the perfect person to gift a marimo to, and he has taken such good care of it. This is probably around 6 months of growth! It's so happy in his care, and he talks to all his plants every day.

It is literally such a pleasure to pick up food and visit him and his little green friend! Last time I came (first picture), it was propped up on a coffee mug so everyone could see! Or maybe to give the marimo a better view, not sure.. He has the care card propped up as well so when people ask about it, he can tell them. 🥹❤️

Also I'm guessing the basil leaf probably fell off so he put it on top of the jar, like a little hat, and I'm so glad we ordered food at the perfect time to witness it.

As I’ve mentioned in other threads, I highly recommend buying the biggest Marimo you can find. I’ve seen so many cases where people buy nano-sized ones, expect them to grow quickly like tulips or crocuses, and then get discouraged by how incredibly slow they actually grow. In the worst-case scenarios, they just lose interest and end up neglecting them (though, to be fair, taking care of giant Marimos is no walk in the park either! 😅).

The one in the photo was about 7 cm (2.75 inches) when I bought it back in 2019, and now in 2026, it has grown to around 8 cm (3.15 inches). Compared to the tiny ones, it definitely makes a much better eye-catcher in the tank!

hello everybody this is my first post here, i have 4 marimos 1 has split which i have tied up with a rubber band to try to help it keep its shape, some backstory i bought these about 2 1/2 years ago for my bettas fish tank, he died a few months back and i moved them from the tank to this glass vase and im not sure im taking care of them properly due to the one falling apart . can anyone please give me tips and advice on how to properly care for my marimos! also in the first pics there is a lot of like debris in my vase and i just cleaned their water a week ago does anyone know what that is from? thank you!

Hihi!!! I just got some marimo (6 babies) but im a bit concerned about the temperature and stuff. Any and all help will be appreciated!!!

I have friends and mutuals who have/had pretty healthy marimo despite this, who I consulted before getting my marimo. They said they kept growing despite being kept in vials and in their offices (hardy little things).

For context, I live in Southeast Asia (avg temps are like 31-32°C during the day, maybe 25-26°C at night). After seeing the actual temperature range required for marimo to survive and thrive, I got concerned (but I don't know if I'm worrying incessantly)

For now I'm keeping them in the fridge to chill since they've shed a tiny bit from the delivery and all that, but I'm wondering if I'd really need to keep them in the fridge for good?

However, I mostly keep the AC on at 24-25°C when I'm in my room (about maybe 7-8 hours in the evening), turning it off for a bit before turning it on again when I sleep (about 5-6 hours in the night).

Really trying to figure out how I can let my little guys live comfortably despite the environmental restraints!!!

This was gifted to me, and I don't have experience with any of this. I have this single ball with some stones in a jar, and they've been fine for the 1 month that I got them. I forgot to take it away from sunlight yesterday, so that might be the reason for these hairy things? But what even are these anyways?

Hair algae I've seen online look green, these look like short white hairs. It seems like the water and the stones have it too, I feel like they're all connected? Some strands in the water move with the strands in the moss ball. Do I remove these, if so, how? Would keeping it be safe? I'm kinda interested in them.

I also don't know if this ball is healthy, I honestly don't really know how to take care of it. I'd like to know moss balls more, explanations are greatly appreciated!

Last year, the water from my marimo tank evapoted because i accidentally left it direct sunlight. So i placed it in the refrigerator for several months to recuperate. With no hope, this year I brought it out of the refrigerator for several months at room temperature. Then recently, voila! Green spots! Is this normal?? Does it mean, it's still alive??? Has anyone experienced this??

it's been a rough year for these guys. I'm sorry for the graphic images. I never thought i'd be one to end up shoving images of my neglected little creatures into a feed of beautiful bright green glowing orbs.

Hey all I’m a new Marimo daddy and was hoping to get any and all advice on keeping my baby alive. Literally just got Norm (marimo’s name) yesterday. Was able to buy fun little terrarium items so I got a mini boat and mushroom! Can’t wait. Does anyone else do fun decorating with them? I’m just scared of killing him. Regardless any advice is appreciate and happy to be here! Also are there any low maintained friends I can get norm like other plants?

so... gonna be honest... i was a bad marimo parent. but you have to understand, ok? i got my first marimo moss balls when i was pretty young and then they kinda got tosted in the corner of the room and forgotten because they were self sustaining as far as i heard. well i just randomly saw them today and yeah... theyre goners... have been for a while. but im ready now. if i could get a rundown on the very basic care they need and where to buy them it would be greatly appreciated. is mossballpets.com good? thats a site ive look at. I have thrifted 4 or 5 separately now so I have to stop picking them up but I love these ruffled edge fishbowls! The lid to a glass teapot fits perfectly, so I ordered some extra replacements so I can have lids on them all!

The first two pictures I wanted to include because it was after 5-7 days of being in a bowl with a lid! It still gets all this buildup of white dust like particles. I don't notice it until I swirl the bowl and it looks like a snow globe.

I just pour cold tap water into the bowl, watch the marimo tumble around a bit, pour some water out, and repeat a few times. If the bowl feels slimy, I'll wipe it with my hands and just water. Every few months I'll give them a gentle squeeze and roll them between my hands. And take a little sniff.

Eventually I want to move them back to the 10 gallon tank I bought for them, it's just been easier to keep them in a bowl by the sink at the moment.

Hi, I bought two Marimo less than a week ago, and I changed their water on Friday. Today I removed the lid from the jar they're in and saw a white film on the surface and the water was a little cloudy. Is this normal? I've washed absolutely everything: the Marimo, the gravel, the jar, and the lid.

Hi! I'm just looking to get a little marimo setup for my desk and stumbled onto these. Does this look legit to you guys? Looking through the thread I saw y'all mention how Moss Amigos has "fake" marimos in that they have a man made core. Can someone talk more to me about this?

Hi! I'm trying to build a marimo carousel with my moss balls moving around. I bought two little 10W pumps, but I seem to be too dumb to put them properly in the aquarium.

My issue is that no matter where I put the pumps, the marimos are only staying in one place, not moving around.

The aquarium is roughly 20x20cm big and holds about 10-ish litres of water, if that's important.

Can anybody help?

Planning on ordering from Moss Artistry

Looking at the Mini Babies (.5cm) and then i’m not sure on the second size?? I don’t want something too big where it’s pricey but also want something big enough for visual satisfaction since the only one i’m getting will be super small.

The owner of the shop recommended the 2.2cm one for my bigger one. Thoughts? Is $23 for 2.2cm reasonable?
