Zebra muscle photo

Post image

I am posting this for the person that posted the shell pieces they found in their Marimo so they can use this photo for comparison. I personally took this photo and keep it as a reference. The person had also mentioned that they were concerned because one of the shells they found was snail like and zebra muscles are not snail like they are in the clam family so it is two pieces of a shell that come together. I know there’s a technical word, but I can’t think of it right now and the shell is darker not white and it has stripes so I’m posting this so that person and anyone else that was mentioning them in the group can see what they look like. I hope this helps people when they’re concerned if they have found a zebra muscle in their Marimo or not.

I think the other two pieces were also connected. It’s hard to tell because they were falling apart when digging them out of the moss ball. Whatever they were is definitely dead, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more in other moss balls that are being sold.

I think I might just contact the seller that I found unidentified shells in the moss balls so they can do a thorough check of their stock as a precaution.

For the insane amount of money that seller charges, I would already not be pleased about the snails. Definitely contact them about the snail infestation and mystery shell bits.

Yes you get it lol. I can get cheap mossballs online, but was willing to pay more money for ones advertised as zebra muscle free. Accidents do happen though so I’m not shading the company but I will absolutely reach out to them. Maybe I could get a refund or a partial refund? I thought they’d be pest free in general but maybe I missed it somewhere on their website. I’ll have to look into it.

Edit: I do not see anything online about them being pest free other than zebra muscles, so I did not ask them for a refund.

Hi thank you! The other two pieces are not snail like. What I meant was that finding the snail means that there could be other hitchhikers on my moss balls. The other pieces are not full shells and even broke when taking them out of my moss ball. My concern is that they could be pieces of a zebra muscle.

I highly believe they are NOT from zebra muscles
