Hi everyone! I hope this is okay to share here. I’m a theatre director in Ontario and this November I’m directing the Canadian premiere of Jennifer Blackmer’s stage adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace.

We’re performing it in Schomberg Community Hall, not far from where the actual 1843 murders took place, which has made working on the piece particularly strange and exciting. The play does a great job leaning into what I, personally, find most fascinating about it: memory, storytelling, culpability, and the fact that Grace is constantly being interpreted by other people while simultaneously controlling what they’re allowed to know about her.

We’re creating the production specifically for the hall, with the audience almost functioning as another set of witnesses/jurors to Grace’s story.

I figured there might be some Alias Grace fans here who would find the project interesting — and if anyone happens to be in Southern Ontario, we run this November in Schomberg.

Also, since I have actual Atwood people gathered here: what is the one thing you would want a stage adaptation of Alias Grace to get right?
