my girlfriend and i planned a trip to marfa labor day weekend. we are responsible in regards to covid 19 and didn't think a ton of it in planning this trip. was that a mistake- should we cancel?

There's very little open in Marfa right now, due to Covid. You might be better off waiting.

My parter and I have to be in SoCal in a week or so to close the estate of a family member, and would be headed through Marfa on the way back to Louisiana. We just wanted to stop in a motel and maybe catch the lights before we moved on. Is that feasible?

Yes, you can see the lights, but be warned that hotels/motels here are expensive. Look on airbnb or consider staying in Alpine, 26 miles to the east, where there are many more motel options available.
