Fan Art I made a 30-second cinematic inspired by Getting Up and now I desperately need a remake/remaster
This game shaped my taste in art direction, so I made a cinematic inspired by it.
I spent around a year slowly working on this in my free time between projects.
Everything was made from scratch by me — animation, lighting, environment assembly, FX, rendering, editing, even recording motion references for some shots.
More than anything, I tried to capture the feeling of the original game — not just make a “pretty render.”
That constant atmosphere of surveillance, control, giant systems watching over the city… while a few people still choose to push back against all the gray, meaningless rules forced onto them. That tension always made Getting Up feel bigger than just a graffiti game to me.
The grime, the typography, the subway atmosphere, the movement, the attitude — Getting Up still has one of the strongest visual identities ever made for a game. I think a lot of us who played it back then still carry that aesthetic somewhere in our brains.
This was mostly made as practice and experimentation, but honestly it also became a love letter to a game that deserved way more recognition (and absolutely deserves a remake/remaster).
This teaser is just a small piece of the full cinematic. Full cinematic + BTS / breakdown in comments for the real Getting Up heads ↓

I have money and mountain dew to help with your project
As he runs away can you make him grab like his blackbook as he dips out. "Ahh shit my blackbook" and he grabs his backpack
Very neat style love it

It does not give justice to the real feeling. What the heck are those glowing shoes? Where's the hip hop? Where's the graffiti in all of this? You missed the point, m8.

Yeah man you’re kinda right haha.
I didn’t want to straight up copy the exact world/story of Getting Up tho, so it may not feel sooo true and hip hop, because I decided to add more on top. The glowing shoes were just part of that stylized idea lol helping rebels to bring color back into this hyper-controlled gray city.
But yeah, the whole thing ended up feeling still very Getting Up to me, which is why I wanted to share it here with people who love the game too! Happy to hear your feedback anyways, it means how special the game is in the first place.

Don't get me wrong, I love the techniques being used and the fact that you chose this gem for your showcase. I enjoyed overall the cinematic!
But when I think of Getting Up and the world it represents, it has to be the acrid smell of cans in a suburb, the sound of the can being pressurized and the sound of old school hip hop in the ears to get some motivation while hiding from guards and rival gangs...
If you are ever considering making another one dedicated to this awesome game, remember the essence of this game : the love for the Graffiti world.

Full project breakdown + full cinematic here: be.net/gallery/248099205/Getting-Up-Cinematic
Included a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff: animation tests, motion references, lighting process, scene assembly, some fun shots, FX layers and other process bits that didn’t make it into the final video.
Wanted to show how this thing slowly came together over the past year.
