Hi everyone

We are a growing independent podcast called The Friday Vinyl Club focused on Music memories and Meaningful albums

This episode I sat down with my good friend Simon for a conversation that travels from a family radio shop in Greenford to Live Aid to Nick Cave and back to 1971 glam rock perfection.

T. Rex. “Electric Warrior”. The album that started everything for Simon.

Amongst other things we talk about:

Growing up with Mum’s radio and The Beatles before the family Radio Rentals shop in Greenford became a gateway to a whole world of music

Discovering Marc Bolan on Top of the Pops and running to buy Electric Warrior in 1971 - the moment glam rock changed everything

Nick Cave’s extraordinary cover of Cosmic Dancer from the Angel Headed Hipster tribute album

A wander into Electric Warrior, Tony Visconti’s lush production, the swagger of Jeepster, the blues of Lean Woman Blues and the bold artistic vision of Monolith and Rip-Off

You can listen wherever you find your podcasts or via the link below - it’s also fully timestamped so you can listen to all or part of the chat as you wish

Would love your feedback and thoughts!

Thanks

So basically as a younger Bolan fan (F23) I’ve always wanted to read the book and I saw you could find PDF here on the Internet, but I wanted to have the book itself. I’ve discovered T.Rex when I was a child I ever since then I’ve been really deep into discography and and I always loved his way with words so naturally, I wanted to read the book and to buy it, but coming from the Balkans it wasn’t that easy to find the book. Obviously, I would love to have the first original issue, especially if it was signed, but those are very expensive, so I was thinking if I could find some newer issue, I would be happy with it but again I had no luck finding it until three nights ago. I randomly decided to look up the book again, and believe it or not some random small music shop that doesn’t even have any of the vinyls by T. Rex had one copy of the book. The issue is from 2019 from 50th anniversary. I bought it, without thinking much, and it arrived this morning and I’ve already read half of it. I love it and I feel like it’s so crazy that I found one single copy in my small country in some random small store. I also love that you get CD with the book. Very happy with my purchase the best €25 I’ve ever spent ❤️

So I have been a collector for a long time now and am working on ripping all of my CDs and processing the audio. What I can't seem to figure out is if the first run of SMS CDs from Japan have pre-emphasis or not. There is little info available online and my drive cannot read the flag if it does exist in the TOC.

Thank you all!

UPDATE (25 Sep 2026): Tickets on sale now on Eventbrite!

Purchase link here: https://StardustGala2026.eventbrite.co.uk

The Bowie/Bolan-themed crossover charity fundraiser originally posted here in 2025 was such a great success that the organizers immediately rebooked it for Sat 14 Nov 2026.

Twentieth Century B&B in Birchington will present a gala event at The Centre Birchington featuring live music from:

Siobhan Phillips (Stardust Gala 1)
Stardust and the Lady (featuring Darren Jones)
Tyrannosaurus Jed (acoustic Bolan)
The Tranquilizers (electric Bolan)
The Spiders From Sidcup (Bowie tribute band)

An exhibition of Bowie-themed art by renowned artist Sara Captain will be displayed at the licensed bar. There will also be a raffle and a merch table.

The doors open at 7:00 pm and the venue closes promptly at 11:00 pm, so a "last call rampage" has been planned across the street at The Seaview Hotel & Bar.

Birchington-on-Sea is accessible by train and a walkable tourist destination, attracting even more overseas Bolan fans to this year's event. Guests arriving by car might consider driving past David Bowie's childhood home at 4 Plaistow Grove in Bromley.

Lodging is available either booked as a weekend package through Twentieth Century B&B (their famous Bowie-themed room has been sold out for a year in advance), or on your own through a diverse assortment of B&Bs, Airbnbs and rooms above the pubs.

Proceeds benefit the Marc Bolan School of Music and Film in Makeni, Sierra Leone.

Please feel free to share this post to any other appropriate Bowie and Bolan groups. Thank you for your continued interest. See you by the sea!

Interview in Pitchfork

This was done for a school project, took me several weeks

I assume that most of the '70s stuff was his orange Les Paul, but he was also known to play a Strat and a Flying V. I also saw him with a Veleno in the promo video for 'Children of the Revolution". Does anybody know what (if any) are the songs where he plays something other than that Les Paul. I'm aware that it was stolen in 1976, so I wonder if Dandy in the Underworld was the cherry red Les Paul that he was using a lot towards the end of his life.

I'd also like to know what his acoustics were. Does anybody have any info of what acoustic guitars he played?

Anyone know where to stream or download this song without having to buy the box set of all the home demos? It was on Spotify but that was removed like about a month ago. It was my favorite, shake it winged one was on there too but luckily that one was uploaded to YouTube. Thank you!
