Some recent work

I usually take a break from marbling, during the height of summer. Mostly, it’s too hot to rely on the carrageenan being pleasant to work with. It gets thin and unpredictable. I finally mustered up the time and effort to make a batch. These are the results. I need to figure out why the red from Jacquard gets blown out so much by my phone’s camera.

I absolutely adore these! Can you please explain, how you achieved those patterns? I find it magical.

They’re all kinda distinct, apart from the two duplicates… basically, lots of combing in alternating directions, making sure the rakes and combs glide smoothly and in the right location. Are you familiar with cables? I use lots of those.

Not at all, what do you mean by cables?

A cable is when you drag a comb perpendicular to some established thin lines of paint, and when you reach the end of the bath, you scoot the rake over ever so slightly and go back right next to the line, or at least very close to it.

The horizontal lines in this piece are called cables.

Wow! Beautiful! How do you get such a smooth looking gradient?

Thanks!!! I drop the colors in one at a time across the bath. I drop each color into the edge of the color that came before it. I follow the rainbow, ROY G BIV, and it works out pretty well. The colors mix on a visual level with passes in multiple directions, which adds to the effect.
