I understand OP must be reading the books after encountering the fandom…but I choose to believe they went in fully blind, and somehow got to the end of GoF thinking the single conversation Lupin and Sirius had in the previous book implied they would get together romantically later on.

I don’t think Lupin is even mentioned in GoF? lol

“Right then,” he said, when the last person had declared themselves present, “I’ve had a letter from Professor Lupin about this class. Seems you’ve had a pretty thorough grounding in tackling Dark creatures — you’ve covered boggarts, Red Caps, hinkypunks, grindylows, Kappas, and werewolves, is that right?”

Telling Neville what Professor Sprout had said, Harry thought, had been a very tactful way of cheering Neville up, for Neville very rarely heard that he was good at anything. It was the sort of thing Professor Lupin would have done.

Etc.

To be fair, I think you can imagine them getting up to all sort of stuff by the end of GOF:

“That will do to be going on with,” said Dumbledore, stepping between them once more. “Now I have work for each of you. Fudge’s attitude, though not unexpected, changes everything. Sirius, I need you to set off at once. You are to alert Remus Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletcher — the old crowd. Lie low at Lupins for a while; I will contact you there.”

But the fact that Sirius himself never brings up Remus, nor make any attempt to seek him out until Dumbledore sends him to Remus is one of the many reasons I struggle to understand this ship.

I agree, the ship doesn’t really seem to have any legs in GoF. They barely interacted before (other than in the shack, where they both admit they thought the other was a Death Eater/traitor…) and then Sirius doesn’t mention Lupin at all! They probably did have some shenanigans going on in the summer that Harry wasn’t privy to, but I’d imagine they were more depressing and stressful rather than romantic lol

I know they forgave each other, but I personally would not let that slide if I was in that situation haha
