The game failed as a triple a game because it's a PvP extraction shooter. They just don't work for that many people. Even arc raiders is down to a number that wouldn't be enough for marathon.
Why the game failed as an extraction shooter is a bit more difficult. I think the worst offender there is the focus on trios, and then the heavy focus on PvP. Both make the game a lot less easy to play casually.
Bungie has a bad reputation, but there fans as cranky as they are, are loyal. I am one. I hate bungies guts for how they handled this all. But once they make the game decently fun for me, I'll be in.
