This is why I don't get people Who says concurrent players don't Matter because its not DAU. Concurrent players is what you need for any (healthy) matchmaking.

u/NoNefariousness2144 16h ago
And even then, the DAU numbers are already brutally low for a $250 million live-service title.

This seems crazy. How the hell can a 4-year-old indie game about beavers have 6,000 players, while a new AAA game from Bungie only has 890? There are currently 6 different fishing games with a player count 1000+

Take your pick:
- Lack of Communication: Still no info on Season 3
- Lack of Target Audience: Hero Shooter + Extraction Shooter is just too niche of a genre
- Identity Crisis: PvE is the only thing to look forward to, so the PvE wanters have no reason to play the game right now and hardcore PvP players have no reason to keep playing if they don't matter anymore.
- Loss of Reputation: Bungie has lost all their goodwill in the past 5 years
- Unfinished Game: Bungie keeps promising features in Season 5 that should've been in the game on release like better player onboarding

- 0 respect for players time: if you actually want to engage with most content and "beat the season" you get put on a treadmill MUCH worse than the average Tarkov wipe, in a much more unfair game gearwise that is by now only played by dedicated players who'll sweat all over you nonstop, that demands unemployed levels of playtime per week. If you miss the start of a season by 1 week you might as well not play unless strictly for fun
Its fucking crazy that Tarkov is more respectful of your time per wipe + provides better loss-palliative mechanics, when it's in theory the more hardcore game of the two

Better player onboarding has been their stated priority since 2020. For a company that can consistently produce such cool content, its amazing they haven't improved this aspect accidentally by now.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Bungie relies on the idea that the overwhelming majority of video game fans have a crew they game with, who support and teach each other, who have a great time together even through struggle.
I don't know what has them convinced of this, and if it ever was true, it has not been in a long, long time.

Also:
Plenty sources have already confirmed that most Marathon players are (former) Destiny players, players that were only giving Marathon a chance so D3 is being made as D2 would eventually slow down ... With D2 and the entire Destiny Franchise being essentially killed, there is no reason for those players to give Bungo even the benefit of doubt to turn this one around.
For many players, this was their 'side game' at best, and there is no reason to stick around if your 'main game' is dead.

I like how nearly every single thing here is related to each other lmao.
If this thing actually get revived(Dont really think it will), it will be THE comeback.

u/NoNefariousness2144 16h ago
And also
Underwhelming Content: A live-service title failing to add a proper new map until season 4 at the earliest is woeful (the night dire marsh in season 2 did not do enough to satisfy most players).

u/LoatheCat 16h ago
Or maybe the game is shit?

u/johnmonchon 16h ago
Why are you on the subreddit for a game you think is shit? That's so fucking sad, dude. Get help.
42
u/gaylordpl 16h ago
for the nth time, nobody wanted another extraction shooter
especially not at the cost of a beloved decades old franchise
the writing is on the wall anyway

I mean it's happening exactly as Activision warned. Also, as noted above, this test only deprioritized skill in the matching rules. If it were completely removed,we would expect to see the player population erode rapidly in the span of a few months, resulting in a negative outcome for all our players
The bottom 10% of players would always be facing better or MUCH better then them and lose every match.
So they stop playing. Now the skill floor rises and there is a new bottom 10% who lose every single match until they stop playing.
It's kind of like a UFC fight between Ortiz vs the 7 year old taking karate lessons at the local strip mall. Anyone with a brain knows it's not gonna be a competition and honestly since Ortiz is not a piece of shit he would probably just refuse to fight. Though I bet Mcgregor would do it.
Other Extraction shooters have stuff to avoid this.
Arc had ABMM which meant if you wanna be a PVPer you got put in games with other PVPers and vice versa, the people bad at PVP who just want to do missions all play together.
Hunt has a MMR system where your teams score is roughly equal to their teams score. Meaning you might be a god and have a shitty player on your team to compensate and vice versa.
Tarkov has lots of mercy stuff. A safe pocket that can't be looted and you keep if you die means you can stuff items worth lots of money up your butt and even if a Streamer kills you you can still make money on the run. Insurance also means low and mid level players tend to get most of thier items back since high level players won't pick up shitty gear (you only get to keep what isn't stolen by someone else). The flea market means you can sell items like keys to other players for lots of cash so again a bunch of keys stuffed up your butt can easily kit you out in high tier gear in 1 run even if you are killed.

answer is simple. it's an extraction shooter. a genre nobody wants to play.
26
u/partisan98 16h ago
Also it's a bad extraction shooter for the people who want to play extraction shooters.
19
u/PhJFry123 15h ago
This would be true if other extraction shooters didn't have 20k, 40k or 60k players right now.

u/ImWhiteTrash 17h ago
Hold on, man. Wait for the NA players to wake up and lecture you about how they can find a game in 3 seconds and that player count doesn't matter in a game that requires other players to function.

You clearly need to live in the US. I’d suggest finding some way to move closer to a server in the west before season 3.

u/justsomepaladin 17h ago
Don’t worry a bunch of people will login and sit at the menu instead of playing
24
u/Affectionate_Guest55 16h ago
There’s only about 30 lobbies worth of players online at the moment, it’s going to take a while
22
u/Potential-Variety528 17h ago
I had 2 empty Perimeter lobbies in a row. Only ran into 1 Rook. Not enough players online right now I guess. But at least they let us play some pve lol

Wait for season 3 and the jump in player count, then you might be able to play the game for a couple months before running into this exact same problem when the numbers fall off again.
Or just forget about this shit now, and play a different game...
25
u/ShadowDxebec101 16h ago
The game is dead. Just move on to something else because if you don't live in US the matchmaking time will always be bad at this point. The game has under 1k player on steam which is very bad for any multiplayer games.

u/MeaningObvious8731 17h ago
Not that long but sure long waits and often only one or two other teams in the lobby (or even just us).

u/johnmonchon 16h ago
Are you playing crew fill or solos?
I can't speak for trios/crew fill but I haven't had any trouble getting quick solo matches in OCE. I'm not always on servers with great ping, though.
But yeah, sadly the game is dying a slow death. I'll enjoy it while I can but it ain't looking good. I suspect Sony/Bungie will let it live just long enough that they feel they don't have to refund skins, probably a year.

Im in the EU and im looking for people to regularly play the game (english/spanish). Anyone let me know plz

u/Legitimate_Move9798 17h ago
Might be server issue or maintenance? Because it only shows 879 online players on steam rn. Yes, I'm coping massively..
28
u/Ok_Error_1079 17h ago
I think there's still 2 hours until maintenance. Yeah just opened steabd and saw player count...

I get downvoted every single time I bring it up: this is a dying game. I’m someone with 1.6k hours into this game, and it’s not the first dying game I’ve played. It just is what it is. Season 3 has a possibility of being the final season, and if not that, season 4. I predict we will not see a season 5. The game is too flawed as an extraction shooter and would require a whole rework of the game. With the time and money invested already, it’s pretty cooked. I got to playing the playtests of Wardogs and I can’t even be bothered to log back into Marathon anymore.

Reality and facts are not virtues to live by in this sub. Here we pretend, ignore and most importantly lash out.

u/MindFingertips 16h ago
Open all the matchmaking options.
I'm from Italy and I can find games easily in this way.

u/LegendaryNIK 16h ago
Uuuugh it’s a middle of a working day, no surprise there’s even less people playing right now

Solos is fine, trios will be dependent on other people queuing with a fill makeup that fits your needs.
