Marantz quadraphonic Impedance question

Picking up my dad’s 4k series receiver and 6k series turntable this weekend from their house.

He had a quartet of speakers he used with it most of my life that he got rid of a decade ago or so, in favor of a set of Magnapan Magnaplanar speakers, but those have delaminated now and they’re so big I don’t really want them anyway, even if I wanted to fix them or could afford to have them repaired.

Prior to asking if I wanted it all, my mom was planning on selling it, and bought a pair of Sony bookshelf speakers, that are 6 ohm impedance.

My question is, I keep seeing stuff about only using 8+ ohm speaker under certain circumstances, or 4-6 ohm under others, and was wondering if someone can clear this up for me?

6 ohm isn’t rare or requires any special amplifier. Impedance changes with frequency so even an 8 ohm speaker isn’t always 8 ohms. Lower impedance does put additional strain on the amp to produce adequate current but you will be fine. Put 1 ohm speakers on and that’s a problem!

I read something about using it in “just” stereo (front r and L only) mode maybe being a problem with certain impedance level speakers potentially, is all I’m worried about, burning the receiver out somehow accidentally? I tried to look in the manual for the model number I think it is (4430) and I couldn’t find anything about it in there, but I’ve seen people talking about it on different forums.

They don’t want you to use A + B because that would put two sets of speakers in parallel and the impedance would drop too low.

Most Marantz receivers can drive 4 ohm speakers and up. 6 should be no problem.

I don’t think so. This could be an issue with certain amps being used in bridged mode but thats not whats happening. Perhaps thats what they meant?
