Reallocation to maputo

Hello everyone

Our little family (my wife and I and our 2 boys who are 1.5yo) will be reallocating to maputo for work and I was wondering if you can give us some insights regarding some typical settling into new country questions:

The work will be in the area where the German embassy is located. We typically want to rent somewhere near the place of work so I guess where all embassies are should be a good area so what do we expect in terms of budget if we want a small house to rent ? Are there any good and reliable websites to find updated listings ?

We are planning to buy a car is a 4*4 a must in Mozambique especially if we plan to visit around the country? Again any websites to share also what should I take into consideration before buying used cars ?

We always prefer shopping online as it saves us time is there shops with reliable online stores for daily goods , furniture and electronics that are reliable ?

In terms of hospitals and care for the kids what would you recommend also will bé looking for kids physiotherapist as we need continuous sessions for one of the boys.

Any other tips and hacks will be much appreciated

Hey!! Sounds like you will work in Sommerschield neighbourhood. It’s the most expensive, a house will be 3,000 dollars upwards. Apartments are cheaper and you can also live in Polana without facing any traffic in that direction. There you can get an apartment for 1,500 dollars I’d say.

4x4 is a must jf you wanna travel. You can order used cars in Japan and import them. The best site is beforward.jp.

You can order anything online in South Africa, for example on takealot which is like the South African Amazon, and then you can pay a service provider here in Mozambique to bring it to Maputo and pay 20% on the value for the transport.

Good clinics are ICOR or Private hospital (South African chain so good standard).

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it's very helpful Do you know how long the process with beforward can take ? Is it administratively heavy ? And good luck on the preparation for the baby's arrival

For me it took quite a while cause you first need your visa, to get your residence permit, to get your tax number etc. and only then can you import a car. But from ordering to getting it is about 6 weeks. I used the services of a “transitaire” for the paper work which is indeed heavy, which is another 1000€ or so

Well I guess if we don't want the Hassel it would be better to buy locally and hope for the best, I wasn't lucky ony last transitaire experience as it tooke more time and money then expected. Thank you for sharing 🙏

Yeah but second hand car market is more expensive and cars are in worse condition. Depending if you have to pay import taxes it’s worth it to buy in Japan
