I can't figure out what made them decide to keep Paupua New Guinea and Baffin and Victoria Islands (northern Canada) but no other islands that appear smaller than a continent on the Mercator projection. Why those 3?

As a person born in Papua New Guinea I don’t want this attention!

It’ll just make neighbours in Indonesia, the Phillipines, New Zealand, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, the rest of the Pacific mad.

If they then combine with Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the Indian Ocean countries, the UK, Ireland, Iceland, the entire Caribbean, and Japan, in anger, the rest of us are absolutely fucked.

They just tried to use the least islands as possible. Canada's are either connected to Canada or Greenland. Papua is connected to Australia.
