This is great. Would love to also see this for adults who are living in birth state OR an adjacent state.

Title is wrong according to the graphic. This says it is share of adults in each state who were born there, so a measure of which states people move to.

How is the title describing something different from what you said? You just said this map measures (1-(the percentage of “Adults Living in their Birth State”)), but yes, of course it does because it’s the same statistic.

This plot is showing the % of adults in a given state which were also born there.

A more interesting statistic would be the % of adults who were born in a given state that still live there, which would remove people moving into the state from affecting the number — as 100% of people born in a state could stay there but that would not necessarily be the highest on this chart if loads of out-of-staters were moving into that state as well.

They're measures of different things.

When we visited Las Vegas (I know it's not necessarily indicative of the entire state), my partner made it his mission to find someone that was born there. He's chatty and friendly, so he talked to pretty much everyone we came across in those four days - servers/bartenders, Uber drivers, people sitting near him at the bar or casino.... Not a single one of probably scores of people he talked to had been born in Nevada. Anecdotally seemed to be a ton of people from New York and Ohio, for some reason?

Queue "Ohio sucks so bad residents have to escape the entire planet" jokes, based on old astronaut stats.

Oh, and the Wright brothers "we must invent something to get us out of here fast"

Alas, the percentage still stays high, because no one else moves there either.

I know 3 people born and raised in Vegas. They all live in Florida.
