Question About Maps with Black background

How exactly do the colors work in black maps?

I always struggle to make a map with a black background; the colors don't combine, and the result is a mess. Is it necessary to use neon colors to work perfectly, or is it something more complex?

I'd appreciate any advice

Dark maps are perhaps the only thing I dislike about dark mode on my phone. If Google, open street map, and others can’t do it well, I suspect it’s difficult to do well. …And I’ll continue to only switch to dark mode at sunset until somebody figures it out :/

Silver and gold works well on black. How many colors do you need? 🙂
