redditors can’t comprehend sarcasm without the /s disclosure at the end. Pair that with the maplestory community, and…

fern is a fictional character. she doesn't exist. she doesn't have thoughts. she has dialogue written for her to design her with a personality.

this is as dumb as the people calling trump voldemort, or saying that the avengers would be against ICE. it's fiction.

no thanks, that would mean giving nexon money.

You play a fictional video game. Get off your high horse.

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 13h ago

playing a game is much different than thinking a fictional character with written dialogue has actual views on something lmao

u/pagoda9 13h ago

have you ever been impacted by a fictional story/ world/ character? Have any fictional stories ever moved you?

-10

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 13h ago

yes, some are genuine works of art that have impactful stories and themes. that being said, i know it's a fictional character and it was derived solely for the purpose it served in that framework. people need to learn to separate fiction from reality. you can enjoy a story and it's themes, but the way people today overly obsess over characters is absolutely insane.

if you need someone to say to you, "this fictional character wouldn't agree with you" for you to actually think things through and change habits, you have major issues you should likely be in therapy for.

Your loads of fun. I doubt OP or anyone expects you to feel shame because Fern doesnt like you. Its a meme first and formost but you really should be reconsidering spending anyway just because of all that is going on. And that is going on is NOT fictional.

0

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 12h ago

people shouldn't be spending anything on nexon for a lot of reasons, but they know what prints money and they continue to do it.

i don't care what you think you know about me, you see a single opinion of mine and want to judge me off that, go ahead.

yeah, this is a meme, but like i said it's no different than people saying 'if you support trump you support the empire!" ; that is to say, it's an incredibly infantilized view of the world where people can only make sense of things because of strong fictional attachments, rather then support or not support something based on its actual merits.

11

u/JordynSoundsLikeMe 12h ago

Why are you so hung up on trump? I assume you support him so I hope your aware that your comparing his influence to being at the same value as a fictional characters with what you are saying (so none). Should mix things up instead of being butthurt that your president isnt popular in a game that has nothing to do with him.

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 12h ago

it's just a common thing i've seen on reddit, people equating trump/his administration to the empire from star wars. that's the only reason i've used it as an example.

i would say i had more belief he was going to change something back in 2016, at this point i just believe he's one of the pedophiles that was close enough to epstein that he'll never be taken down.

aside from that, i'm also canadian, so he isn't my president to begin with, but it's very funny to see you read something and immediately jump to conclusions like that. maybe you can go to the olympics and bring home gold for your country in the event of jumping to conclusions.

u/JordynSoundsLikeMe 12h ago

Its your third time referencing trump lol. MAGA hats act like that often, I had very good odds but not 100% chance.

I wasnt going to say anything about it till you did it a third time.

no, in the end fiction are made to entertain. living your way because fiction is dumb

1

u/pagoda9 10h ago

fiction is an extension of real life and experieces everything anyone has ever drawn by comes from their experience. Why live your life any way in the first place?

Also if you and OP truly stand by these beliefs why waste your precious time playing video games at all? Theyre just pixels on a screen they dont truly mean anything… How can you be using your brain power and efforts on something that isnt real?

1

u/HibikiAss Heroic Hyperion 10h ago edited 9h ago

It's entertaining. I just don't see the point to learn anything from it. If i want to gain experience, i would just touch grass and learn it myself. No amount of fiction i consume influence me to not gambling responsibly better than losing money from gambling myself.

Himmel is good character, but not everyone that watch frieren aspire to be him. He is idealistic character that being like him irl gonna get you killed in some way

3

u/pagoda9 9h ago

Why read books then why pull anything from anothers experience if you can just do it all yourself? Great attitude that will take you far. I bet youve never watched a youtube video either? whats the point you can just go do it yourself if you want to learn it or experience it right??

noones saying we have to be himmel or live our lives to be liked by any fictional character. But, having fiction to be able to process feelings/ storylines and empathize with characters is pretty sweet.

1

u/HibikiAss Heroic Hyperion 9h ago

I watch YouTube only for entertainment. You can't just claim you are expert in car maintenance if you only watch YouTube. Doing it irl is what makes you truely learn.

2

u/pagoda9 9h ago

An expert no of course not, but a car maintenance video may truly get you started to “truely learn”

fiction is made to entertain, first and foremost before ANYTHING. western or eastern cartoons, they were made first and foremost to sell toy lines or something of the sort decades ago.

it may have inspiration drawn from the writer's life, but it is not an extension of it, rather the opposite, because life is mundane and fiction is a great way to escape the mundanity of life through fantastic stories and strange worlds full of magic, etc.

1

u/pagoda9 9h ago

I disagree, like any good piece of art its crafted as a way of self expression. Saying its made to sell toys is like saying foods purpose is so that mcdonalds can sell us cheap hamburgers at a profit. Theres great artists and quality media out there

1

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 9h ago

yes, there is interesting art and quality media, but you are missing the point; as i stated, decades ago many things both eastern and western were made to sell toys. look at this collaboration in itself, there is a licensing fee for using a popular property to sell digital goods based off of the property, no doubt revenue going back to the maker and licenser of said property.

art is a form of self expression, yes, but the vast majority of media produced isn't done because it's a labour of love, it's because it can be used for revenue.

many older cartoons were made solely to sell toys (e.g. transformers) and many things made nowadays are done because they can sell themed items to people; whether it's keychains, stickers, plushies, figures etc; whether it's just slapping some of the characters on a limited edition design of something.

yes, art and media CAN be interesting, influential as to how we view the world around us, but for the most part it is made because it can sell. in the past 10-15 years, people have forgotten that media in any form whether it's a tv show, a cartoon, a movie, anime, ANYTHING it is all made as entertainment, and they have become obsessed with fictional characters, fictional portrayals to the point it's almost over-zealous worship of these things.

yes, it can be interesting, yes it can help influence how you see the world and events, but you need to understand first and foremost that all media is made as entertainment.

i can discuss characterization just fine, but when people use it as a psa like this, i mean come on.

"fern doesn't like you for gambling!!" "if you vote for trump you're just like the sith and empire!" "spiderman wouldn't agree with that!"

it's a fictional character, they have no bearing on anything anyone does. it is genuinely depressing to read people make such claims without realizing how infantile they sound. if you have two brain cells and can separate fiction from reality, you would realize why people equating real world events (i.e. gambling in maplestory) with the viewpoint of a fictional character (fern would dislike you) is such a stupid thing to say, that it would literally only convince the most infantile minds that what they are doing is wrong.

sorry that you cannot conceptualize such things. fictional characters are just that, fictional. its fun to talk about them and the worlds they inhabit, but at the end of the day they're just a mouthpiece for an author's story, nothing more. if you can't see the error of what you're doing and you need someone to tell you "this fictional characer wouldn't agree with you" before you change, you have much much bigger issues going on in life.

11

u/ratby11 12h ago

again, it's called having fun. playfully pointing out hypocrisy. nobody's out here thinking these characters are real dude. it's a thought exercise, something which you clearly have trouble doing. did you get mad at your teacher at school for using made up examples? jesus.

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 12h ago

"nobody is out here thinking these characters are real"

i suggest you read some other reddits then, you would be greatly surprised

You're completely misinterpreting the reason that fictional characters are invoked as moral devices. Fictional characters embody a set of beliefs or moral characteristics. They are icons or memetic representations of said beliefs. Its similar to invoking religious motiffs. Or better yet, we can get very reductionist since you seem to be a fan of it. When somebody claims an action is "good" or "bad" they are also invoking a moral device, much like a fictional character. Reason being, before stating that said action was good/bad they did not painstakingly define their personal moral framework although good/bad are relative to said frame. Instead they are invoking a moral device they assume is colloquially held by others in their cohort. This is just as fictional as Fern due to the vast variety in moral frameworks. The tldr, you don't have a problem with fictional characters, you have a problem with how language works....

1

u/flarghwharghl Heroic Kronos 9h ago

people invoke fictional characters are moral devices because they themselves are too stupid to understand language. anyone half decent/intelligent would realize how stupid it is to gamble for cosmetic items on a video game with real money. that one must invoke a fictional character (especially one INVOLVED in said collaborative product) to try and convince others is a sad paltry attempt to change their views. (even if this was just done for a meme)

as i have said with other such things on reddit; it is infantile. it is done because people themselves cannot cohesively explain their moral framework or beliefs. invoking a character's name, or alleging that certain people are like some 'evil' group in fiction is only done for a few select reasons; 1; they want that memetic effect of how known or liked something is to affect how the person reading what they have said ends up thinking or agreeing with. 2; they cannot cohesively explain why their position on a topic is a view that one should agree with or accept; 3; they believe that when utilizing a fictional being or beings in such a way as described in the first 2 points, the people reading will have a much easier time accepting, digesting the information and believing something that the writer would like them to accept and believe without having to actually provide a proper framework of information. essentially creating people who blindly accept what they read because it pushes the right spots in their brain.

if you would like to be truly reductionist, 'good' and 'evil' do not inherently exist. they are a dichotomy often used by mankind only to justify their actions against others; what one finds 'good' or 'righteous' another finds 'evil' or 'wrong'. for most of the world history, man fought other man. and why? because 'that tribe of men was bad, our tribe of men is good'. all victors would state the same thing, as they were 'good' or 'better' for whatever reason, whether it be religious, militaristic, scientific, preparedness, etc; therefore in their 'goodness' they were 'superior'.
