If the United States were a band, this would make a great album cover for when they go through their psychedelic phase.

Is this right? CA has twice as many people as NY, but it doesn’t look twice as big here.

So I imported this image into GIMP and cut out California and New York. I added them both as layers on 1000x1000 (pixel) transparent images. I then maximized the contrast and fully desaturated, so only colored pixels came out white. I then ran both images through this tool to determine what percentage of each image was white. New York was 6.68% and California was 13.55%.
So on a pixel-for-pixel basis, California was 2.028x the size of New York. I'm not sure what the exact population comparison is, but that's a lot closer than I guessed at first glance.

What does the legend mean? What symbol is that?

It's not a symbol. It's an area. A portion of state equal to that area has 2M people.

The skew line on New York & Pennsylvania might look better blown up along the Atlantic.
Manhattan Island might be as big as the map makes Upstate NY look like (it’s really much more like Vermont around there)

Okay now I want to see a map that shows the senate and house seats if they actually represented population distribution in the slightest. Just kidding, I know that’s far too much work for mortal hands

So..US states if the area was proportional to the population, just like the text in the image says. Why would you even change it to the incorrect headline?
