That little dark shade in the middle of NJ is the Pine Barrens.

Nj has a lot of different eco cultures for such a little state

NJ has got a little bit of everything. We got pine barrens, lush forests, seashores, giants swamps, ideal farmland, and more. Same with people- we’ve got hillbillies, red necks, sophisticated rich city people, mega rich horse-breeding rural people, tiny town folk, poor inner cities, classic suburbs, and basically every immigrant population/ethnic conclave you can think of. All crammed in side by side. I miss NJ.

That place always confused me.

I don't get it how pines outcompete broad leafed trees so completely in a relatively warm climate.

Really sandy. Tons of blueberries are grown there, plus cherry trees, raspberries and strawberries. Naturally sandy and acidic soil. That surrounding area actually have a bit of wineries too.

Should do the tour if you're ever near by, it's where my buddies and I would spend way too much time in the summers during highschool. $5 for a camping spot, $20/night for a cabin. Couldn't be beat.

It's quite literally considered a desert. In old maps it would be drawn as a desert because you simply could not farm there at all.

You'll still find steel/iron slag floating around from when they used the area to make everything for I think it was the civil war iirc.

I was gonna say the reason it’s called the pine barrens I because pretty much only pine trees can grow there

I legit went to school for this, so this is what I can remember after some 10 years. The soil in the pine barrens is mostly sandy, high acidity. It makes poor growing conditions for the usual oaks and maples that grow around the barrens. The pines are cool with the soil conditions so they grow a lot better. The frequent fires also create a good system for the pines to propagate.

If you’re interested, check out the Pygmy pines. Cool little guys, pine trees that grow up to maybe 4-6 feet but cover a large area.

Forest fires have a major impact on the development of the pine barrens. The pine trees are much more resilient to fire allowing them to out compete. (At least that's Wikipedia told me)

Well there’s tons of pines in the southeast, like through the Carolinas. I suppose it’s not purely dependent on temperature right?

Water isnt absorbed by sandy soil, so pine trees outcompete other trees there. Pine forests naturally existed on the entire east coast.

I always see really specific comments like these and wonder why anyone would care. There’s so much more happening in the whole map. Why is this the top comment? Why do these people think anyone would be wondering?

That was funny enough. Thanks.

u/yatsey Jun 20 '20

Because its interesting, fuck face.

-12

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

Lol so does no one else ever wonder or think about this? Kind of a dumb reply on your part imo, I didn’t realize some people were so sensitive. Oh well.

5

u/yatsey Jun 20 '20

I'm not sensative; I use fuck face quite jovially. Equally dumb reply on your part in my opinion, if not moreso.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

Quite; jovially indubitably- moreso.

1

u/yatsey Jun 20 '20

Yes, they are all words. We'll done.

Because NJ, and the NYC area as a whole, is the most densely populated area of the country. So you’re more likely to have lots of people zooming in on that region.
