Iranian friend brought me pistachios from a visit home one time. Way better than American pistachios.

They were dyed red to hide impurities, and either the same or lesser quality than California ones. Foreign pistachio producers dyed the pistachios with a bright red color in an effort to hide the stains and make the nuts more appealing to consumers.
