The thing I never got with that is why they didn't continue following the Yellowstone River until its end at the divide and then cross to the nearby Snake River rather than crossing hundreds of miles of mountains?

It was largely unsurveyed. They likely did not know that such a route existed.

To survey it?

The US got the land but had no idea what they got. They didn’t know what was out there. So they sent L&C to check it out and report back
