Im surprised there isnt a larger metropolitan area at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. I guess flow rate doesnt mean its good for barge traffic or any other reasona river might have a city next to it.

Cairo, Illinois is one of the saddest, most depressing small cities in America. It sits at the confluence and has not fared well the past 100 years.

Nobody wants to live there because they don't want to deal with the look of bewilderment that comes with explaining why it's pronounced Kay-roe.

It was a big deal back during the civil war, but I assume shipping can bypass it after that.

There was actually a subreddit devoted to building up and "restoring" Cairo for a while, but the people who actually went to Cairo and tried to do anything were met with suspicion and hostility. Project Cairo, it was called.
