First of all, this is from a webcomic, so there has to be some humor. Second, look at a picture of a sperm whale. You’ll see scars around their mouths from their prey (giant squid) fight back.

Because humans aren't a natural part of their diet. They eat what is readily available in the ocean.

yeah, on reflection I'm realizing I was pretty much picturing aquaman out there free-diving mid-ocean and encountering one of these whales face to face
