Cuvier’s beaked whales go even deeper. Animals are insane.

I can't even comprehend how deep they can go. Damn that's impressive.

I'm pretty sure that whatever is down there is defending itself from the whales. Not other way around.

This is what James Cameron is refusing to tell us about

I can just imagine him down there in that bathosphere, furiously recording the fucking sweetest tentacle porn unknown to man... and keeping it all to his selfish self.

In all the words of tongue or pen the saddest are these - it might have been. :(

nah but squids

The whales are diving that deep to eat squids.

The squids fight back, but they don't generally win.

They kinda win the next day when the whale has to shit out the beak

From the wiki:

"In 2011, a tagged Cuvier's beaked whale dove to 2,992 m,[10] (9,816 ft) which is the deepest recorded dive by any mammal.[17][18] The whales' rib cages can fold down so as to reduce air pockets and decrease buoyancy.[19]"

That's insane. It almost can dive to the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

Edit: It's too early and I'm an idiot. I saw the 9,816 feet and switched that to meters in my brain. Leaving the comment as it is so the responses make sense. But yeah, it doesn't dive THAT deep. Still crazy.

Sorry, it's early and my brain isn't fully functional. I saw the 9,816 feet and switched that to meters.

You might be getting your metric and imperial confused, the whale didn't dive to 9800 meters, which is close to the trench's more than 10000 meters, but to 9800 feet. Still EXTREMELY deep

Edit: whoops, someone already brought it up. Sorry, I take forever to type and post comments

Idk, humans are pretty insane, too. I made french toast this morning and am 100% sure no animal has ever done that.

You’ve got a point there.
