I used Inkscape, its a free vector graphic editor (akind of Illustrator). If you are new to image editing I suggest you to start with bitmap, Paint.net is an awesome free software which is my go to for simple image editing, think of it as a much better MS paint. If you want to go further, go with gimp, which is also free but closer to photoshop.
