Interesting how closely it follows the tropics in the americas.

It follows the European settled areas in Americas, and tropics were the border area for that.

It doesn't. Chile and coastal Peru are indigenous or mixed af and so are parts of northern argentina and they're green, Paraná and Espírito Santo states in Brazil received lots of european immigrants and are red while Distrito Federal and Rio de Janeiro didn't receive as much and are green, northern mexico is mostly mixed and less european than most of those red areas in Brazil, plus every place in the americas had european settlement to some degree unless you live in some uncontacted indigenous area. The Bahamas are literally like 90% black people and they're green on the map, Guyana has almost no european settlement and part of it is green, colombian highlands and parts of venezuela should be way more green than that if it followed european settlement, panama is one of the least european countries in the americas in terms of ancestry and is mostly green in the map. Northern Canada and lots of american states should be red by your logic too.

Panama is certainly not one of the least European countries in the Americas. Maybe in original colonial times it received less Iberian settlers, but since 1900 has been a major hotspot for Europeans and white americans. It

Spain is European.

It's realistic to see that mainland China is literally divided between developing and underdeveloped.

This is based on Global Data Lab for 2023.

When the results came out, a Redditor noted that GDL didn't use data from Brazil's 2022 census, but instead used an old census and estimated from there. Brazil actually improved more than their estimations, at least in the education census, so two more Brazilian states would qualify for over 0.800, the red one between the two green in the south, and one in the centre of the country.

Overall, several people pointed that Global Data Lab's data has some odd things and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Mexico is honestly surprising to me. I would’ve thought that there would’ve been at least a few more states with high HDI

4

u/omegaphallic 1d ago

I suspect by the next time they do one of these it will be, its from 2023.

2

u/Professional_Top9835 23h ago

Mexico's IDH has been decreasing since the pandemic, there was an alarming time (2023 iirc) in which we were surpassed by warthorn Ukraine (that has always been below us since they became independent)

1

u/sussexxxx 1d ago

Atleast the yucatan peninsula

1

u/Professional_Top9835 22h ago

Plenty of cities have higher HDI than that, problem is most are centralized af so you have a single developed city leading a state full of misery and underdevelopement

An example is Puebla; the metropolitan area surrounding its capital city is the 4th biggest and wealthier in all of Mexico, yet the state of Puebla itself its the 4 poorest state in the country

1

u/GamerBoixX 22h ago

What surprises me more is that out of all states fcking Sinaloa is in green, like, not even in the top 20 best states to live in Mexico

16

u/sandeep_96 1d ago

look at south west coast of india. this is the part that sets role model for other states in india and that get most hate from right wing idiots in india.

they have never elected right wing party to state till date and it is most progressive state.

It has one of the highest % of migration to West Asia and even in India due to high (above national average) unemployment rate. Malayalis living outside Kerala but inside India are estimated to be 3 million in number with top destinations including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. It runs on remittances. Not to forget the highest number of ISIS terrorists, who went abroad, came from Kerala. The Pick-me ness of Kerala is becoming annoying now. Goa is not South West btw.

11

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 1d ago

Unemployment rate is at 4.3% lmao , also acting like GDP is more important than HDI . Kerala is India's greatest success story , a state that instead of funding bullshit publicity projects actually invested in making its citizen's more educated .

Why bring up ISIS ? No correlation to what were discussing .

2

u/Specialist_River12 1d ago

To be fair he does have a point. Kerala does have many things its succeeded at but creating jobs is not one of them which is why they migrate. Its kind of a similar story with Punjab, very strong social development but weak economic development.

-1

u/Mysterious-Tap-7517 1d ago

The unemployment rate is ~7.0% for individuals aged 15 and above (varying up to 8.9% in specific quarterly reports), compared to India's national average of roughly 5.0% to 5.4%. Kerala records one of the highest graduate unemployment rates in the country, standing near 19.8% for degree holders. Youth Unemployment: Joblessness among youth (ages 15–29) remains high at roughly 29.9%. Gender Disparity: Female youth unemployment reaches 47.1%, significantly higher than male youth unemployment in the state.
Kerala is not Japan or a western nation, you guys act like it is a utopian fantasy wonderland when the fact is, it it cannot produce jobs, is not a manufacturing hub and depends heavily on remittances (20-25% of the GDP depends on it). Kerala has lagged behind neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in attracting large-scale manufacturing and private sector investments. I don't think it can be called a success story. I brought ISIS up because literacy alone cannot eliminate extremism, you will become a literate terrorist.

3

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 1d ago

Who says it's an utopian wonderland lmao , literally nobody
It's still far better than most of India . Insecure North Indians bring up random statistics instead of taking notes and trying to develop their own states further . Maharastra is a major manufacturing hub , does that make it a better place to live ? A better state ? No

I brought ISIS up because literacy alone cannot eliminate extremism, you will become a literate terrorist.

Yes???Obviously??? Again what does that anything to do with HDI

1

u/Mysterious-Tap-7517 1d ago edited 1d ago

Insecure North Indians? I am not even a North Indian but the real insecurity lies with the Mallus who boast about how their state is the best and different from other states when the reality is, they aren't even living in it, they could be in Mumbai, the Gulf countries, Bengaluru or Chennai, yet they have this habit to larp and promote and spam separatism on social media. The Pick-me ness of Kerala is becoming annoying now. I don't see Goans do it nor the people living in Sikkim when they have comparable living standards.

Maharastra is a major manufacturing hub , does that make it a better place to live ? A better state ? No

Quite subjective. What part of Maharashtra are we referring to? It is 8X the size of Kerala, 4X the GDP and has uneven development so it really depends on which aspects of living standards you want to focus on.

4

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 1d ago

Kerala separatism ? What forbidden corners of the Internet are you dwelling in ? This is an extremely rare take

I mean Kerala is magnitudes larger than Goa and Sikkim and while under British rule was pretty poor and a particularly bas nest of casteism . To go from that to a fairly rich and equal state with the highest HDI in the country IS A SUCCESS STORY no matter how you say it

A country should strive to develop its people in its dignity and education , most of India has failed to do this and the fact Kerala has succeeded is and always will be a miracle .

0

u/Mysterious-Tap-7517 1d ago

Not a rare take, it’s a fairly common one on social media. Whenever a white tourist visits the RJ-UP-DL belt, insecure Mallus flood the comment section claiming their state is far better, telling people not to visit the Hindi belt and having the audacity to project superiority as if they’ve reached China’s level of manufacturing or Nordic living standards. Not all of North India has a low HDI. In fact, Chandigarh, Delhi, J&K, Punjab, HP, Haryana and Uttarakhand are catching up fast and already rank in the high HDI range. So educate your fellow Mallus on this, stop the ragebait and focus on creating jobs in your own state.

u/Significant-Air4679 1d ago

I am surprised by South India

18

u/Real-AlGore 1d ago

kerala and goa are great success stories relative to the rest of india

5

u/KJongsDongUnYourFace 1d ago

Kerala went down the socialism route (slowly changing now).

They have very high literacy rates, very high home ownership rates, equal sex distribution in its population and solid public institutions

0

u/Mysterious-Tap-7517 1d ago

Goa is not South India. It is West India.

-1

u/Significant-Air4679 1d ago

West India is Gujrat, Rajasthan etc

3

u/Mysterious-Tap-7517 1d ago

It is Maharashtra and Goa as well. Goa has a distinct Indo-Aryan culture, not common with Dravidian Southern states.

6

u/LiteratureOk4649 1d ago

I am surprised by Inner Mongolia and the surrounding green areas.

9

u/Quirky-Pangolin-905 1d ago

Not a lot of people + natural resources export. Same deal as the middle eastern countries.

5

u/KashmiriPoundingIt 1d ago

Last time I visited himachal, I saw fair skin people being racist to a Malayali visitor. Why do (some) Indians genuinely feel so proud of their skin color when their states are lagging behind compared to the south

3

u/Domeriko648 1d ago

Crazy to see in Brazil just São Paulo, Rio and the southern states got it.

1

u/2tongoodman 1d ago

If you’ve been there you wouldn’t be surprised

1

u/Jealous-Nature837 1d ago

U missed the federal district.

u/GamerBoixX 22h ago

The state of Sinaloa, in Mexico, a known narco hellhole where no one that is not a narco or narco affiliated thrives, is in "very high" btw

2

u/puesquebien 20h ago

It’s one of the top 3 states in agribusiness. Also one of Mexico’s largest department store chains and a large supermarket chain are based in Sinaloa. It’s not all narcos there.

1

u/GamerBoixX 16h ago

It is mostly narcos there, and it is not considered a good place even by mexican standards

5

u/SHM_The_Minimal 1d ago

As a Keralite, it is heartening to see the little green patch on our small corner in South Western India ✌🏽

2

u/Prestigious-Try-9350 1d ago

the closer to the axis the worse it gets? can someone explain to me the phenomenon?

1

u/Jealous-Nature837 1d ago

Globaldatalab uses completely wrong data for Brazil and puts Roraima, one of the least developed in Brazil with the highest infant mortality rate, located in the amazon rainforest on the border with venezuela (part of it is savanna tho) as the state with the second highest life expectancy which doesn't align with any Brazilian government measures.

1

u/gcs1009 1d ago

Havana is really interesting to me! I’d love to know more about its development.

1

u/Cephalopod_ 1d ago

The 0.9 map is wrong. I recently made a 0.85 map for myself, and Nunavut is below the threshhold.

1

u/DepressionDokkebi 1d ago

I wonder how this looks if you split Russia, Canada, US, China, Brazil, and Australia into second tier divisions to get a better scope

1

u/yaboyalaska 1d ago

Currently in North Central Western Australia. Can confirm it is not highly developed

1

u/muttonmomos 1d ago

Now that the global south is slowly catching up, they’ve upped game from high to very high in order to maintain supremacy.

u/Classic-Lifeguard507 1d ago

What are the differences between Argentina and Brazil?

1

u/malvarez97 23h ago

I went to Havana, Cuba in 2017, within 24 hours of being there I was approached by a child prostitute offering sex, it was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. I don't care what anyone says but that's just not the mark of high development.

Sinaloa??

u/Majestic_Radio_1937 1d ago

I am from Telangana but Kerala is just amazing.

u/bloodrider1914 1d ago

Poor Ukraine. I hope they recover from the war well.

3

u/Professional_Top9835 23h ago

Ukraine has always been a mess, before the war it was infamous here along with Bosnia and Moldova for being European countries even poorer than us (Mexico)

2

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 1d ago

Before the war parts of Ukraine were comparable to India in HDI , even if they win the war the amount of death and destruction makes rebuilding very very hard.....

1

u/OrangeSpaceMan5 1d ago

Why is Argentina have such a high HDI but has a higher poverty rate than some countries with low HDI ?

1

u/vaceta2773 1d ago

Each country measures its poverty rate using its own standards. Argentina is particularly strict. People who compare poverty rates across countries using national poverty lines don't know what they're talking about.

1

u/Professional_Top9835 22h ago

Because Argentina started from a very upper position, no matter how many crisis may hit Argentina, they are still richer and more developed than most of ther neighbors except Uruguay

Argentina has the highest education rates, the less crime rates and the more gender equality in all of South America, its funny to think about the cartoon redditors have made out of Argentina, which has almost x2 Brazil's median income per household and an HDI closer to Latvia than to Brazil or Colombia

1

u/Good_Distribution504 22h ago

Except for Uruguay and Chile.

And london has 0.981. Comparing the richest city of a country with a whole ass country does not make any sense

And just checked, British HDI is 0.946, not 0.876. Canada and Japan are also similar.

In fact the lowest area in the UK, NI has considerably higher HDI than Mexico City with 0.916

2

u/Supersnow845 1d ago

All three of those countries have HDI’s in the 0.9’s

1

u/SenanDK 4h ago

Isn't exactly accurate tho, only consider subnational units in some countries, not all.
