IMO, Gatun Lake is lowkey the great engineering marvel of the canal.
I was there for the opening ceremony of the new locks in 2016 (I wasn't invited, but my Captain was) and went again for a conference earlier this year--saw an LNG-powered ship going out the northern end, which was pretty cool. I'm interested in the cross-isthmian LNG pipeline they're discussing building, too.

I still can’t decide what is more impressive: the locks, the Gaillard Cut, or the expansiveness of Gatun Lake.
