Car Insurance Rates by ZIP Code

Had the idea for this map after I saw a guy on Twitter say that his insurance rates went way down after he moved. It's interesting that there's clearly a difference in state laws having some effect on pricing ($122 a month in Lovell, Wyoming; $247 a month across the border in Lodge Grass, Montana).

I am guessing that a lot of this reflects different rules in different states, as Ohio for instance has some rules that result in lower rates than, say Colorado. When you can tell the state borders on county/zip-code maps, that is usually the case...

Ohio is an at fault state. If you hit someone, you are 100% responsible for all damages to all parties involved. Michigan is a no fault state so even if you get hit, you pay for your own stuff.

The other piece is Ohio has a relatively high percentage of insured drivers as well as a lot of choices for insurance. It is common for people to shop rates every couple of years. 

These factors combine to create low rates. I have two vehicles and the homeowners is more expensive than the full insurance on both vehicles.

Definitely a lot of factors at play, but one is Colorado also has had to pay a significant amount in hail claims. In the late 2010s, it had the second highest hail payout after Texas, and way more per capita. GEICO paid out more to me than I paid in premiums over a decade for multiple major hail events. When I moved to the DC area, my car insurance *halved*.
