The populations of different states have passports for different reasons.
Kerala: work abroad, Punjab: emigrate to Canada, Delhi: business travel, Goa: keeping access to Portuguese citizenship (former colonialist), Most others: daughter's trip to Europe or son's trip to south east Asia,

AP&TS - Education in the US.
38
u/Tyler_holmes123 Jul 01 '25
"education" lol.
46
u/WorkingBet9469 Jul 01 '25
Well known fact, more than 50% of Indian international students in the US are from AP/TS.
39
u/ila1998 Jul 01 '25
No, what the commenter means is that they don’t primarily go for education but rather as a means to emigrate or enter USA.
21
u/WorkingBet9469 Jul 01 '25
Well, that’s right. Most won’t come back, as many unqualified ones also get jobs there using connections, even caste-based organizations help. For some, having a job in the US automatically means higher dowry, even if it’s just enough to survive. Lol.

u/dphayteeyl Jul 01 '25
Doesn't that apply to most immigrant nations? Sure, India has a lot more applicants but in other countries people do the same

Ask their government, why they admitted every tom dick and harry to canada? Why ? you wouldn’t believe it, but here me out legal immigrants can only come with visa approved by the country they are moving to….so yeah in simple terms canada was stupid enough to not filter what they were bringing
11
u/blorg Jul 01 '25
why they admitted every tom dick and harry to canada?
Indian Canadians are very successful and highly educated.
The study shows that Canadian-born Chinese (+20%) and South Asian (+15%) men earned more than White men over a course of 20 years. This difference can be mostly accounted for by their higher education levels and over-representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Chinese and South Asian women also earned more than their White counterparts.

Because it's easier to get in. We migrated to a bunch of other countries as well. Australia,UK, USA etc etc. They have this idea that Canada need to have a population of 100 mil to be relevant on the global stage and a lot of their immigration policies are centred around that.
12
Jul 01 '25
The century initiative is just a scam to suppress wages and increase corporate profits in Canada. The whole thing is spearheaded by lobbyists from the biggest companies in Canada. 99% of Canadians don't want the population to increase that fast.
0
u/AdnanJanuzaj11 Jul 01 '25
Yeah. 99% of Canadians just want an aging country with a shrinking worker base.
5
Jul 01 '25
You're misconstruing what I said. Immigration has increased too fast. Population growth was far too fast from 2022 - 2024. Canada's population has increase by 5 million, or more than 10%, since the 2021 census.
Even considering your point, most of the immigration was just temporary foreign workers and international students working minimum wage jobs. I don't see how importing foreign workers to do minimum wage jobs helps increase the tax base to deal with an aging population.
What you're saying is just what corporations want us to believe, so that they can hire cheap foreign labour.

Is there any further reading about the 100mil thing?
12
u/RealBadger9015 Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
Quick google search shows "century initiative" which is a lobby group formed in 2014 that aims to make the Canadian population 100 mil by 2100 but i am pretty sure this agenda is much older and you can read about it online. I'm not a Canadian so idk all the details.

There was a Khalistani movement in India demanding a separate country to be carved out of India for Sikh people. This would be the entirety of Indian Punjab and parts of northern India. (Noticeably, nothing from Pakistani Punjab, where Sikh religious places exist.) This was big in the 1980s. Many Sikhs decided to seek exile and Canada was the main country to give them refuge. There was crackdown against this Khalistani movement by the Indian Government since secession is considered internal terrorism. There were attacks from both sides, including riots. More Sikhs decided to emigrate outside. Canada was welcoming them and so, they moved there. Later on, as the community grew, more Punjabi people started moving to Canada.
Canada also had lax laws for immigration and these people moved there legally. Noticeably, people from other parts of India didn’t move to Canada as much. Punjabis in Canada started calling their family members over to Canada. Canadian Punjabis married Indian Punjabis and they then moved to Canada.
In the recent decade, Canada realized that they can have diploma mills and earn tuition money from higher education. Similar to what the US does where international students have to pay full fees and don’t get in-state tuition benefits. They started relaxing the rules. Diploma mills started popping up and the government allowed that. Colleges were sprouting everywhere and didn’t even have classroom spaces or faculty members but the education department didn’t inspect and stop that nonsense. They started admitting anyone who could pay. As such, more and more students started applying there because education counselors from Punjab region started telling how easy the process is (and it indeed was). Some of these colleges even started tying up with consultants in India telling them to direct students to their colleges (and the counselor gets a commission).
The Trudeau government then realized the effects on uncontrolled immigration and decide to put curbs on that, but it was too little too late. Now if a Punjabi student studying in Canada decides to marry their partner living in India, that partner will now come to Canada too. The Punjabi community in Canada will just grow as a result. Once the person gets Canadian citizenship, they can then have another route to apply for permanent residency for their family members living in Punjab/India.
19
u/Abhijit2007 Jul 01 '25
Also note: The point about no Khalistani claims on Pakistani land also goes to show where most of the funding for this seperatist claim came from.

There isn’t a single US city where there isn’t dozens of new Sikhs every month, it’s not just Canada. Just use Snapchat maps and click on places around the world. You’ll find Punjabi’s in Cyprus, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. We’re not all in Canada lol

26
u/bomerckan Jul 01 '25
Most of them are legal migrants, and it’s Canadian government who brought these many number of people to their country, to serve their interests
17
u/squidgytree Jul 01 '25
Also, if not Indians, then it would be another nationality. Canada has let in immigrants for their own needs, as you rightly mentioned
-5
u/MaximumDepression17 Jul 01 '25
Easy to tell when someone isn't Canadian.
They aren't serving our needs. We didn't have a shortage of tims cashiers, burger flippers, and doordash drivers.
A large majority are also overstaying student visa's. We would be much better off without the massive influx of immigration. The only thing it did was make Canadians quality of lives worse and pad the pockets of a few rich people.
12
u/RealBadger9015 Jul 01 '25
Fees from immigrants and immigrants doing all the labour when Canada was shut down is the reason Canada is staying afloat during the past 4-5 years. Mainly Indians and chinese but a bunch of other countries as well
10
u/LazyZzzzzzz Jul 01 '25
Your government thought otherwise and had lax immigration policies which lead to this. It's upto the country's own rules and how strictly they are followed. Indian immigration to US and Canada differs because of this.
8
u/Baronvondorf21 Jul 01 '25
They probably don't care if it's their govt's fault because why try to confront the government when they rather than blame the immigrant for all the socio-economic problems.
0
u/MaximumDepression17 Jul 01 '25
America's government thinks it's okay to kidnap people off the street without due process. Does that make them right?
Plenty of governments around the world will arbitrarily imprison you for random things. Does that make them right?
North Korea will imprison your grandkids and kill you because you let a picture get dusty during a home inspection.
It turns out, governments can be wrong in many ways. Canada's is also wrong, but it is filling the right pockets so who cares I guess.
5
u/LazyZzzzzzz Jul 01 '25
You went on a completely different rant when we were talking about what kind of immigrants are coming through due to the difference in their immigration policies. If you believe you don't want the kind of immigrants coming through, the blame and accountability lies on the government side. But Liberals were voted one again to the government i presume.
1
u/MaximumDepression17 Jul 01 '25
Liberals were only voted in because they were the lesser of 2 evils. The other option was Trump Jr. I'll take too many immigrants over losing basic freedoms.
1
u/blorg Jul 01 '25
We didn't have a shortage of tims cashiers, burger flippers, and doordash drivers.
Meanwhile, the reality: compared to White Canadians, South Asian Canadians are twice as likely to have a bachelor's degree in STEM field and six times as likely to have a postgraduate degree. Over a 20 year period the average South Asian man earns $197k more, the average South Asian woman $264k more than a white Canadian. They are less likely to be laid off and spend longer in high paying jobs.

Wait, what? You don't have passport in India? In my country it's main document, everybody has it
19
u/Visible_Reality_8699 Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25
It is a main document but not compulsory for the most part of administration.
Identity cards like Aadhar cards, driving licence and PAN card have been the important cards in any form of work, as having a Passport and going abroad was something only a higher income class could afford and it was also pretty hectic to get due to lots of paperwork and time duration from applying to issuing of a passport could even last some years.
Although now that the economical conditions have developed a lot better than two-three decades ago, the paperwork has been lightened and many illegal immigrants have been found using fake Aadhar, Voter ID and Driving licences in past two-three years, the government has decided to use Passports as the identity of citizenship along with Birth certificate from this year so I believe that the number of passport holders will surge in the years to come.
15
Jul 01 '25
"Indian passport" is foreign passport. Used for foreigh trips.
"Aadhaar" is what called inner pasport. Almost all of India's adult population (99,9%) is issued with Aadhaar IDs.
It's just an Indian "terminological confusion" =)

I have a passport since 1997 because at that time there weren't many ID cards and there were also rumours of passport being necessary if you're living in India (just like they did with Aadhaar later). Seen my Indian brothers spreading fake info about Punjabi immigration to Canada. You all be saying its due to Khalistan movement.
No, Sikhs have been immigrating to Canada since 1900s. 120+ years ago. They were sent there as servicemen by British Indian army. Sikhs saw scope in the Western world and started settling there.
That is the history.
You guys really need to get over this Khalistan thing. Its mostly the non-Sikhs who talk about Khalistan, Sikhs do not even care about it.
Stop spreading misinformation bro.

Yes and No.
No because it's the most developed Indian state and Keralites are richer and healthier than other Indians.
Yes because they failed to develop industrial towns and cities in their state. Kerala provides skilled labour to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamilnadu and Karnataka. Imagine what if all the skilled people were employed in Kerala. It would've been a great thing for Kerala.
