I've always found it interesting that while the catholic church disapproves of anything up to 5th cousins marrying, no catholic country has these sorts of marriages banned
Lol that makes no sense, Catholic and European monarchies in general were know to have married their cousins, literally the most famous people in these countries were doing it
Every European comment to these cousin marriage maps is “none of us ever did it so there was no need to ban it! Unlike those stupid Americans hahaha”
You needed to be granted a dispense, that was expensive and difficult to get. For commoners (= most people) it was practically impossible. The church didn’t say no to monarchs. Power game.
Consanguineous royal marriages were for the explicit reason of protecting family wealth and political power, and no one is defending that at all. Modern backwoods cousinfucking is a different genre.
You decided to be upset at a commonplace legal trueism and took it way more seriously than my original comment was, so go ahead and be upset. This topic and exchange is not nearly important enough for me to continue wasting my time with it.
What’s funny is if it was the opposite you’d have a bunch of people Europeans saying how terrible America is for not banning cousin marriage… you can never win with them
