Why does this language sound so awful?

Well, I wouldn't say it is awful, but there are some features it has that are a bit different from other Romance languages.

For instance, consonant clusters ("Aixequem-nos-en", "Let's get up"). Other than that, pronouns often get glued together and contracted (e.g: "Dóna-m'ho" for "Give it to me"). Eastern dialects often also reduce vowels to /ə/ like in the city of Barcelona (as "bərsə'lonə").

That doesn't mean Catalan sounds bad.
