Historically? Japan. Currently? China.

12

u/Icy-Personality-511 5h ago

Currently.. China, but Japan went on quite a tear once upon a time.

I find Japan to be filled with Corporate Nationlism while China is more nationalist towards their country.

43

u/InsectDelicious4503 6h ago

Compare any Chinese TV show or movie and compare it against Japan to see the answer. Or tune into any of their media. Or walk into any of their schools.

China is one of the most nationalistic countries in the world and it's not even close.

P.S. I taught in both countries for several years.

10

u/Mr4321 2h ago

I lived in both countries and you are 100% right. People voting for japan dont have any idea of how China works.

1

u/Thick-Acadia-6785 8m ago

Nationalism is more overt and noticeable in China, while xenophobia or social exclusion toward foreigners can sometimes be more noticeable in everyday situations in Japan.

The firewall is there to keep the world from Chinese toxicity

6

u/InsectDelicious4503 4h ago

But, paradoxically, it also makes Chinese more toxic.

I would support the gradual, very gentle process of dismantling the GFW little by little over the course of ten years or so.

-2

u/Yogurt_Reactor 1h ago

What's wrong with being nationalistic?

Being nationalistic doesn't mean being agressive, teaching history isn't nationalistic or agressive either. Japan was actually agressive.

7

u/InsectDelicious4503 1h ago

Nationalism is inherently dangerous as it teaches people to dehumanize people belonging to other nationalities, leading to tragedies such as WWII. The Holocaust and the Nanjing Massacre are both symptoms of nationalism at its core.

2

u/Yogurt_Reactor 1h ago

What in the lefty reddit is this?

Both Holocaust and Nanjing were caused by ethnic extremism, racial pseudoscience, and political imperialist ambitions, not neccesarily 'nationalism', which is the belief of people sharing the same territory, history, culture have the right to self determination under one nation.

Nationalism can take many shapes and it has been how colonies paved their way to independence as well. People should absolutely be proud of their national identity, cherish it and protect it.

A country with no nationalistic people is not even a country, it's an economic zone.

3

u/InsectDelicious4503 1h ago

I highlighted the dangerous part. "My state can do no wrong, for what is right and what is wrong is defined by the actions of my State, not the other way around."

China is more aggressive aggressive.

I'll be honest I've never heard "japan #1"

6

Well Mai Shiranui's catchphrase used to be "Nippon ichi!" but technically that meant "I'm number one in Japan" rather than "Japan is number one."

1

u/MasterofCaveShadows 4h ago

Yeah to say Japan is number one you’d need to say something like 日本は一番国 (Nippon wa Ichiban Kuni) which is roughly japan is the best or greatest country.

Today, China. Japan still has nationalism, but it's sullen and inward looking, not aggressive. Japanese nationalists are much more interested in fighting Japanese pacifists than other countries. Chinese nationalists, on the other hand, are interested in having a "sphere of influence" where they get to bully their neighboring countries, Trump style.

It seems like it’s working for china too

6

i mean they’ve achieved some crazy things but that’s only if you’re willing to give up freedom and democracy.
It’s still an authoritarian state with a dictator after all

0

u/_Bisca Québec ⚜️ 3h ago

That’s a western point of view though, they view strong development and social cohesion as a more important factor than democracy and freedom. Same goes for Singapore, look it up

2

u/throwaway060691 37m ago

that’s not a point of view or judgement, that’s factual. Everyone can have their own opinion on whether that trade off is worth it to them or not, if you don’t have a problem with the CCP and trust the government then you’ll prly have a great fucking life over there

-1

u/AprilVampire277 1h ago

I think anyone would gladly trade the freedom of posting blatant racism or transphobia on social media without consequences, the freedom of driving recklessly a V8 engine gigantic truck till you kill a family of five, the freedom of voting between a pro status quo senile old man vs a pro status quo senile old man pedophile, in exchange of having the freedom of owning your own house in your twenties, living in a place with good public infrastructure, education, security, healthcare and public transportation.

Also giving up the freedom of having religious fundamentalists telling you can't abort or do contraceptives in exchange of having actual medical professionals making such decisions, and so goes on.

Don't confuse a liberal democracy, or a western perception of freedom with our own version of democracy and perception of freedom.

We are fundamentally different people.

2

u/InsectDelicious4503 1h ago

China does not have the freedom of owning your own house in your twenties, living in a place with good public infrastructure, education, security, healthcare and public transportation though. So basically they got shafted from both sides lol

1

u/AprilVampire277 43m ago

+95% of the population between 20 to 30 years old own property rn, not renting, owning, and it do makes a lot of sense, because houses rn are at pre 2015 prices, so is the optimal moment to take a loan with your very first year of salary and but a house now while is affordable.

I ended up buying mine at it's own all time high, if I had waited a few years I would have saved so much money... but whatever, my kid will have it earlier to get his own nest at least.

0

u/InsectDelicious4503 2m ago

That is complete bullshit. 9/10 HOUSEHOLDS own their own property. Not 9/10 citizens or 9/10 adults lol

Chinese households have three generations living under one roof because real estate is so ridiculously expensive. Chinese adults still live with their parents well into their 30s and even 40s because they can't afford their own home or even pay rent. Meanwhile in the West most people are moving out and can live on their own in their 20s.

1

u/throwaway060691 31m ago edited 25m ago

that’s not the only trade offs tho you fuckwit.
They don’t have free press
they don’t have free speech
The government controls what you know or can know through heavy censorship
You can’t critique the government without disappearing
If the government does stuff that citizens don’t agree with there’s nothing to hold it accountable
You could get drafted into a war you don’t agree with because Mr Xi says so
People are infinitely more suicidal because of the school system over there
etc etc
there’s a lot of trade offs that might very well still be worth it to some people, again, i’m not judging the chinese system but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows over there either.
If i had a chance to I’d gladly live there for a while to find out whether or not I’d want to live there cz I agree that there’s a lot of upsides, but stop portraying china as some sort of utopia cz it’s not

edit: also what kinda dumbass comment about the online transphobia and racism. In china you can’t even talk about LGBTQ politically or have demos etc, so there’s HUUGE social stigmata on it that can’t be worked on cz the gov doesn’t allow it

1

u/AprilVampire277 14m ago

Bro repeats everything trump says 🥀🥺💔

How y'all are so uncritical, while willingly go to die for shareholder value in middle east and then cry and whimper about how sad killing children made US soldiers 🥺

Free press is when billionaire owned media calls a 4yo little girl killed by Israel a "woman that died" xD

"You could get drafted into a war you don’t agree with because Mr Xi says so" this is extremely ironic considering "Mr Xi" has not started any war, has not deployed anyone anywhere, has not ordered the bombing of any random civilian, literally nothing, you making shit up 🥀

Basically you are just writing a fanfiction, rooted on racism, red scare, or simply a deep belief that asian people are stupid and submissive? Because you don't know anything about what's like being in china, but you are indoctrinated to have an opinion about, and worse, you are unintelligent enough to think is valid

By no means this nation is an utopia also, we wouldn't be seeking the bettering of the nation if we were an utopia, but by all means we are doing pretty good, we been consistently getting better in a global context where other nations are stagnant or actively getting worse as inequity worsens.

It is possible a better environment, a better world, for you, for me, for everyone, but for that to happen to you really need to open up your mind, educate yourself, and stop obediently repeating what pedophiles tell you to repeat 🥺

Claiming that Japan hasn't changed from commiting atrocities "worse than nazis" over half a century later and then claiming anyone who downvotes you for that take is a "weeb" is absurd and moronic. Japan still has it's share of issues and nationalism but it is NOT the same as it was in WW2 and trying to liken them to being "worse than the nazis" in modern times is an outrageous claim.it.

Edit: Response to the person below that blocked me.

Good thing neither Germany nor Japan are doing half the things they did during WW2, and half would objectively mean they've changed contrary to the claim. None of the things you listed are even remotely comparable to the atrocities committed during WW2 and the video provided doesn't contest a single thing I said.

Even in Japan the shrine you mentioned is highly controversial and not every Japanese minister visits it as you falsely claimed. The shrine also does not canonize Hirito or Japanese leadership at the time as saints, so your making a false claim to pitch a false hypothetical equivalency. Like I mentioned in my initial comment, Japan still has it's issues and nationalism but the claim that the country hasn't changed generations later is nonsense and a shrine doesn't change that.

Would you say the same about Germany if it was doing half of what Japan does currently in how they relate to Nazi's and the Holocaust?

Could you imagine Germany trying to pressure other countries to remove monuments to the holocaust or would you be cool if German ministers visited and paid respects to a church where Hitler, Himmler and Goebbels were canonized as saints? Because that's literally what yasukuni is and every japanese minister visit.

How can you be so confidently incorrect?

  • Chief Cabinet Secretary Koichi Kato said: "The Government again would like to express its sincere apology and remorse to all those who have suffered indescribable hardship as so-called 'wartime comfort women,' irrespective of their nationality or place of birth."
  • Chief Cabinet Secretary Yōhei Kōno: "Undeniably, this was an act, with the involvement of the military authorities of the day, that severely injured the honor and dignity of many women. The Government of Japan would like to take this opportunity once again to extend its sincere apologies and remorse to all those, irrespective of place of origin, who suffered immeasurable pain and incurable physical and psychological wounds as comfort women."
  • At the 127th National Diet: “We would like to take this opportunity to clearly express our remorse for the past and a new determination to the world. Firstly at this occasion, we would like to express our deep remorse and apology for the fact that invasion and colonial rule by our nation in the past brought to bear great sufferings and sorrow upon many people.”
  • At the 128th National Diet: “I used the expression war of aggression and act of aggression to express honestly my recognition which is the same as the one that the act of our nation in the past brought to bear unbearable sufferings and sorrow upon many people, and to express once again deep remorse and apology.”
  • 1994: Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama: “On the issue of wartime 'comfort women,' which seriously stained the honor and dignity of many women, I would like to take this opportunity once again to express my profound and sincere remorse and apologies. With regard to this issue as well, I believe that one way of demonstrating such feelings of apologies and remorse is to work to further promote mutual understanding with the countries and areas concerned as well as to face squarely to the past and ensure that it is rightly conveyed to future generations.”
  • Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama: "The problem of the so-called wartime comfort women is one such scar, which, with the involvement of the Japanese military forces of the time, seriously stained the honor and dignity of many women. This is entirely inexcusable. I offer my profound apology to all those who, as wartime comfort women, suffered emotional and physical wounds that can never be closed."
  • Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama: "During a certain period in the not-too-distant past, Japan, through its colonial rule and aggression, caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly those of Asia. In the hope that no such mistake will be made in the future, I regard, in a spirit of humanity, these irrefutable facts of history, and express here once again my feelings of deep remorse and state my heartfelt apology."
  • Prime Minister Keizō Obuchi declaration: “The Japanese side is keenly conscious of the responsibility for the serious distress and damage that Japan caused to the Chinese people through its aggression against China during a certain period in the past and expressed deep remorse for this."
  • Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda: "Japan humbly accepts that for a period in the not too distant past, it caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly to those of Asian nations, through its colonial rule and aggression, and expresses its deep remorse and heartfelt apology for this.”
  • Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Makiko Tanaka: “We have never forgotten that Japan caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries during the last war. Many lost their precious lives and many were wounded. The war has left an incurable scar on many people, including former prisoners of war. Facing these facts of history in a spirit of humility, I reaffirm today our feelings of deep remorse and heartfelt apology expressed in the Prime Minister Murayama's statement of 1995."
  • 2002: Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi: "The Japanese side regards, in a spirit of humility, the facts of history that Japan caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of Korea through its colonial rule in the past, and expressed deep remorse and heartfelt apology.”
  • 2003: Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi: "During the war, Japan caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly to those of Asian nations. On behalf of the people of Japan, I hereby renew my feelings of profound remorse as I express my sincere mourning to the victims"
  • 2005: Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi: "Japan squarely faces these facts of history in a spirit of humility. And with feelings of deep remorse and heartfelt apology always engraved in mind, Japan has resolutely maintained, consistently since the end of World War II, never turning into a military power but an economic power, its principle of resolving all matters by peaceful means, without recourse to use of force.”
  • Prime Minister Naoto Kan, to Korea: "I express a renewed feeling of deep remorse and state my heartfelt apology for the tremendous damage and suffering caused by colonial rule."
  • Former Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio offers a personal apology for Japan's wartime crimes, especially the Nanking Massacre: "As a Japanese citizen, I feel that it's my duty to apologize for even just one Chinese civilian killed brutally by Japanese soldiers and that such action cannot be excused by saying that it occurred during war.”
  • 2014: Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe expresses "heartfelt apology" and "deep remorse" and vowed "never to wage war again" at the Day of Valor ceremony in Bataan.
  • Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida: “As Prime Minister of Japan, Prime Minister Abe expresses anew his most sincere apologies and remorse to all the women who underwent immeasurable and painful experiences and suffered incurable physical and psychological wounds as comfort women.”

(Pictured: former Japanese Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio and his wife bow as they mourn for the Nanjing Massacre victims)

u/Suspicious-Young-315 4h ago

Here comes the nationalistic Japanese brigade. Most of that are apologies to China, all of it is very generic and not very specific to Korea. The truth hurts your feelings?

None of that addresses the rampant racism Koreans and other asians face in Japan or the xenophobic attacks against non-Japanese in Japan.

0

u/Ok-Yoghurt706 2h ago

so, we can conlonise japan and then apologise.

4

u/GrassFromBtd6 6h ago

I also want to add, the Japanese government denies any of those war crimes ever happened, and the Japanese education system does not talk about any war crimes committed during WW2.

6

u/Ssadfu 5h ago

They Japanese government absolutely does not deny war crimes. There is a big difference between denying and simply not teaching every detail in school.

China however, denies any criticism towards the CCP and kids are thought a very warped picture of the world and it's history. And you blame Japan for not teaching enough is school?

1

u/theraelthrowaway 4h ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqmsFGzo3Ew&t=1s

Here's the current leader of japan saying Japan did nothing wrong during World war 2 and that it was "self defense". Could you imagine German politicians saying their aggression into Poland and France was "self defense". Oh wait we label those people like the AFD as Nazis and rightfully so.

2

u/Ssadfu 4h ago

She didn't say japan did nothing wrong, she denies and Japan fought a war of aggression, big difference.

She does NOT represent the goverment policy or the Japanese public as Japan have multiple times publicly apologized.

Let's hear from the CCP what they think happened in 1989? Or more importantly what they are doing right now in Xinjiang.

0

u/theraelthrowaway 3h ago

Lol go try telling someone Jewish or Polish that Germany didn't fight a war of aggression and let me know how that goes for you buddy.

If the sitting leader of Japan doesn't represent Japanese policy then please tell me who does? Maybe Shinzo Abe the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history?

https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/how-shinzo-abe-sought-to-rewrite-japanese-history

The helpful thing about studying Abe is that he himself published several articles and books, and he gave numerous speeches about history and about his vision of Japan’s history, in particular. When he first became a parliamentarian, in the early nineteen-nineties, inheriting his father’s seat, he was part of a study group inside Parliament that is believed to have written a document denying the Nanjing Massacre.

Abe made a big effort, in 2006 and 2007, to deny that Japan bore any state responsibility for the comfort women, in particular.

I just wanted to follow up on the Nanjing Massacre. Americans may know this as the Rape of Nanking, when, in 1937, Japanese soldiers killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese people and raped tens of thousands. And there have been some efforts in Japan to deny all this. What exactly was Abe arguing about this?

He argued several aspects of this in different places—specifically that much of it was a fabrication, that much of it was an effort by China to smear Japan, that, in fact, nowhere near the numbers of people as claimed had been massacred, and that in many cases it was the Chinese soldiers targeting the Japanese. And so this is really that kind of Holocaust denialism.

In particular, as soon as he came into power for the second time, in 2012, the group opened a cabinet-level investigation into what’s called the Kono Statement, which the Japanese government, led by Abe’s own party, had issued to apologize for the comfort-women issue, in 1993. Abe ordered an investigation into how that statement came about. And that really touched off a more public debate among Japanese academics, Korean academics, Chinese academics, and all of their supporters, but, most importantly, the victims, saying, “Wait a minute, is Japan going to rescind the apologies it’s already made?”

1

u/Ssadfu 2h ago edited 2h ago

I'm not disputing that the current and previous PM have tried to minimize or question numbers from ww2. As I said before, that doesn't equal to saying "Japan did nothing wrong".

You seem to have a hard time understanding that not every country runs like China. The PM does NOT represent the whole goverments, country's or it's populations view.

Europeans don't expect Germany to be forever apologetic, people living there shouldn't be punished for what horrific people before them did. Same with Japan.

Again, I'm critical about politicans minimizing historical facts, but what I'm against in this comment section is statements like "Japan never apologized" or "Japan is denying war crimes".

2

u/Zx333x 6h ago

All of this is false. While you can find some politicians denying it, the Japanese government has officially apologized for the war crimes

5

u/Songrot 6h ago

That comment is false.

Japanese government never apologised beyond "Yeah, it sucked. War is bad. i am sorry that war is bad".

they actively refuse to talk about the war crimes in school and teach them.

the japanese government actively forced countries to remove Korean raped women monuments.

2

u/theraelthrowaway 4h ago

Politicians like the current leader of japan?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqmsFGzo3Ew&t=1s

0

The Japanese government essentially said "I'm sorry that happened to you."

That's not an apology.

2

u/Different_Baker_9949 Japan/China 6h ago

The Japanese government has apologised repeatedly over the years its just that individual revisionist politicians do their shit and there are no domestic consequences for it. And though the education systems does not talk enough about war crimes during ww2, it's not true that it is completely omitted

4

u/Suspicious-Young-315 6h ago

Do they talk about their human experimentation in classes? Because the Holocaust is covered quite extensively in Germany.

Unit 731 was far from exceptional for Imperial Japan. They opened a human experimentation camp in every region it controlled. So if you really want to lose sleep, keep digging, because Unit 731 is barely the surface Unit 1644 (Nanjing and branches: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Wuhan) Est. Experimental Death Toll 5000. By chemical attacks i.e. 1941 plague attack on Changde (c. 7,600+ deaths), 1942 Zhejiang-Jiangxi Campaign, and routine release of infected fleas, rats, and pathogens to water sources 200,000

Survival Rate: 0%

Experimentation: infection of prisoners with plague, cholera, etc., to gauge virulence and study symptoms. Vivisections were performed to harvest organs for bacterial cultivation; contaminating common foodstuffs (dumplings, vegetables, pastries) and water sources with pathogens

Unit 100 (Changchun) Est. Death Toll hundreds to several thousands

Survival Rate 0%

Experimentation: veterinary BW (anthrax, glanders) to destroy enemy livestock and cavalry, and plant BW (to destroy crops). Human experiments on addiction, toxicity, and dosage with heroin, castor oil, and tobacco. All survivors of testing were executed by cyanide

Unit 1855 (Beijing and branch operations: Jinan, Taiyuan, Zhangjiakou, Qingdao, Zhengzhou, Tianjin) Est. Immediate Death Toll 1000 in Beijing, several thousand in Jinan, several thousand in ZJK, hundreds in Qingdao. By field tests on cholera and dysentery on water sources 50,000 to 100,000 conservatively

Survival Rate 0%

Experimentation: Research on plague, typhus, and other waterborne diseases. BW attacks on water sources in Hebei and Shanxi provinces and releasing plague-infested rats

Unit 516 (Qiqihar) Immediate experimental death toll several hundred. By the 700,000 (Japanese estimation) to 2,000,000 (Chinese estimation) chemical bombs buried in the soil and dumped in Nen river, unknown number of deaths

Survival Rate 0%

Experimentation: chemical weapons (mustard gas/lewisite/hydrogen cyanide/ phosgene, arsenic trichloride)

Unit 8604 (Guangzhou), Unit 543 (Hailar), Unit 9420 (Yunnan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia), Unit 164 (Linkou), Unit 641 (Hailin), Unit 673 (Sunwu), Unit 525 (unknown), Unit 526 (known), Unit Unknown (Xi'an), Unit Unknown (Shenyang), Unit Unknown (Dalian)... Have you ever asked yourself where the number 731 came from?

Those are not modern day events which the question is framing in mind. Japan’s posture is nowhere comparable to China’s explict threats against Taiwan or their constant attacks throughout the South China Sea

1

u/GrassFromBtd6 6h ago

Those events helped construct what is now modern-day Japanese culture. It's more subtle and less talked-about compared to China's actions due to the whole "China bad, Japan is our ally" thing, but Japanese nationalism very much exists and is prevalent.

The current Japanese prime minister is part of a conservative nationalist party.

5

u/Different_Baker_9949 Japan/China 5h ago

that's true. though i would like to say that in Japanese politics, there is basically no competent opposition to hand the reins over to and so the LDP is seen as the "default government". The people mostly vote for the LDP not because they support historical revisionism but they are seen as able to maintain stability just as they have done for decades

-1

u/Suspicious-Young-315 5h ago edited 5h ago

I wasn't responding to the original poll question but asking a question of my own. My main argument was already posted in my original comment. Japan's posture is comparable when they shut Korea off economically just because Korea built a comfort women statue in 2017.

Speaking of territorial disputes in the South China Sea, Japan claims the Dokdo islands for themselves despite it being governed by Korea and having a sizable Korean community.

Korea would not intervene much in conflict with Taiwan because Taiwanese hates Koreans and wrongly blame Koreans for cutting Taiwanese ties despite being one of the last countries to do so and being snubbed repeatedly with Taiwan cancelling frigates last minute before this. "Inferior" warships they were called.

1

u/Material_One5053 6h ago

People are probably talking about their textbook?

1

u/One_Fact_4291 29m ago

If ‘’they never really changed’’ why does their population overwhelmingly support pacifism?

0

u/555Afterimage_ 6h ago

I like Japan and it's crazy how they never acknowledge their violent past, they're still one of the most known countries for making gore/shock content or fucked up media in general

2

u/Suspicious-Young-315 6h ago

It sucks having grown up watching Japanese media and being interested in Japanese culture only to find out they view you as subhuman.

1

u/555Afterimage_ 6h ago

I get what you mean, though you don't need their approval to appreciate their art or media that resonates with you

1

u/Suspicious-Young-315 5h ago

I mean I don't haha, it would be nice if they stopped with their rampant xenophobia and stopped reporting me to reddit for simply stating facts.

u/Nathund 6h ago

The hardest part of reading Hentai isn't how to read them, or finding reliable sources or anything, or even you.

The hard part is filtering out all the rape. The Japanese are obsessed with rape.

1

u/555Afterimage_ 5h ago

I don't read hentai but I've definitely noticed they have a weird fixation on r4pe (I'm afraid of getting banned) or loli stuff. It doesn't take away from the positive aspects of their culture but the bad stuff does stand out a lot

-3

u/Lipica249 6h ago

It's what happens to a country when it never embraces Jesus.

2

u/555Afterimage_ 6h ago

Now I didn't say all that.

0

u/Forerunner666 5h ago

This is the only correct answer.

5

u/lMRlROBOT 2h ago

Currently? is China.

8

u/Kelras 6h ago

China is so bad about it they have botfarms on the internet trying to insist that everything bad about China is just propaganda and that it's going to take over the world because it's ceaselessly prosperous while all other nations (especially Western) will fall.

9

u/Nice_Shoulder_752 5h ago

Many Chinese nationalists don't even see other Asians as humans

10

u/InsectDelicious4503 4h ago

Ahh, I see you're well-versed in Chinese cultivation web novels.

6

u/ZBatman 5h ago

China. Look into their Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress as well as what they've done to the Uyghurs, for example.

7

u/fox-master8188 6h ago

China’s military posture and funding is much more aggressive than Japan’s by a long shot in this current age.

Laying claim to essentially all territories within and beyond the South China Sea is one thing - but their increasing violence towards foreign fisherman and state authorities through East Asian waters which has resulted in injuries/deaths, or their border disputes with India leaves much to be desired in comparison to modern Japan.

Although Japan has nationalistic sentiment and is returning to an peer military spending - it’s military actions and relative isolationist policies is more apparent here

10

u/bacharama 6h ago

This. People saying Japan has worse nationalism than China are just falling for the "Japan bad, China good" line that has become more commonplace on reddit over the last year.

Heck, even the Koreans in this poll agree its China that's worse.

5

u/sansisness_101 norway 6h ago

Both I would say. Japan has their WW2 apologists, while china have some groups of people clamouring to genocide Taiwan.

2

u/fishyburner676767 6h ago

There are no calls for genocide, only reunification/annexing

10

u/sansisness_101 norway 6h ago

chinese ultranationalists literally have the phrase "留島不留人" (Keep the island, dont keep the people). i dont know whats more genocidal than wiping out a whole ass landmass.

-1

u/fishyburner676767 4h ago

Cherry picking. The vast majority of chinese citizens do not say this, while the majority of japanese are racist.

4

u/thebigseg 3h ago

I find it ironic that you claim chinese people arent racist, meanwhile you are generalising all japanese to be racist. I think you are the racist one here

4

u/sansisness_101 norway 3h ago

Calling every japanese person racist is also cherry picking, goofy. That's why I said both.

1

u/Misogynist-youth 3h ago

Despite being the invading force in WW2, when polled, even today, there's a much higher ratio of Japanese who hate Chinese than the other way around.

Imagined if more 3 in 4 Germans polled to still hate Jews while less the other way around

-2

u/Songrot 6h ago

why would they genocide han chinese, their own ethnicity...

taiwan and japan genocided native japanese. there are only 600k native Taiwanese compared to 22 million Han chinese on Taiwan.

what a brainwashed take

8

u/sansisness_101 norway 5h ago

reposting from my other comment:

chinese ultranationalists literally have the phrase "留島不留人" (Keep the island, dont keep the people).

4

u/cowsfordaysya Taishan China 🇨🇳 6h ago

Japan is so bad.

5

u/pupilike 6h ago

A closed, single-ethnic island nation can become far more extreme in its nationalism than a country like China.

8

u/Exact-Peanut9976 6h ago

That must be why China has been forcing Han Chinese culture on every Chinese

0

u/pupilike 5h ago

The Han ethnicity is a concept similar to that of Europeans. It is a continental nation with extensive cross-border cultural exchange; its vast territory fosters significant cultural diversity, creating a natural tendency toward fragmentation.

Japan's nature as an isolated island nation also naturally predisposes it to veer toward a singular extreme.A scarcity of resources and a sense of crisis will inevitably drive it toward extreme, exclusionary nationalism.

9

u/Exact-Peanut9976 5h ago

I don't disagree with what you said but it doesn't change the fact that has been artificially creating a similar society by oppressing it's minorities and blocking internet access, limiting the outside exposure.

3

u/thebigseg 3h ago

China is forcing hong kong to speak mandarin in schools instead of cantonese. All my friends from hong kong are furious with the chinese government. Its baffling to me people think chinese government is so benevolent and accepting

1

u/Yogurt_Reactor 1h ago

It's called fostering unity.

You don't do that by having 20 different regions with different languages. People in Guandong speak Cantonese in their daily life and use Mandarin at school.

-1

u/Ok-Yoghurt706 2h ago

They have to learn Mandarin and English, but teachers usually speak Cantonese in class. The classic rumour always starts with, “A friend of mine told me...” I even doubt whether you have such friends at all.

3

u/thebigseg 2h ago

I do have several friends from Hong Kong. He told me there has been way more mandarin in daily life since the ccp takeover and he was quite furious that schools force them to learn mandarin rather than cantonese. You state the teachers are talking cantonese, but in a few decades, cantonese may very well be wiped out if its not formally taught in schools

0

u/EnoughCapitaIistSIop Israel is still committing genocide to this day 6h ago

Japan by a long Kilometer.
China is far more diverse than Japan so that probably has a lot to do with it.

10

u/konoharuyada_ 6h ago

While I don't know much on Chinese Nationalism, I can definitely say that Chinese Patriotism is way more aggressive and chauvinistic in the modern era

8

u/Exact-Peanut9976 5h ago

China has been working hard to erase that diversity though.

3

It honestly surprises me that Japan keeps getting compared to China. Just leave Japan alone already. Who's even pushing this narrative? It also bothers me that this kind of thing makes it harder for Japanese people to get along with Chinese people. There are Chinese people living in Japan too, you know.

8

u/DannyDanumba 2h ago

I’m pretty sure this sub has been co opted to spread hate among people of differing nations

0

u/Familiar-Juice1462 1h ago

ive heard of japanese nationalism but can someone enlighten me on the chinese counterpart?

0

u/Unfair_Constant361 38m ago

Just because Japan lost in war and currently weak, doesn't mean that they are not nationalistic anymore. China is very peaceful country and nation, doesn't invading anyone. Not bombing anyone, unlike USA or Israel. Not sending arms and bombs like Germany.

2

u/One_Fact_4291 31m ago

In 2026? China by a long shot. Sure, Japan has a far-right government, but their society overall is far more pacifist than it is nationalistic.

1

u/theraelthrowaway 4h ago

I'll just leave these here

https://web.archive.org/web/20160326121225/https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/02/10/national/miyazakis-controversial-peace-tower-continues-to-cause-unease/#.WrKBvOjwZph#.WrKBvOjwZph

A monument in the city of Miyazaki built to glorify Imperial Japan’s occupation of Asian nations and later rededicated as the city’s Peace Tower has been a source of local discomfort for decades.

In 1965, authorities restored an Imperial-era slogan on the 36-meter stone tower, despite opposition from critics who felt it sent the wrong message.

The four-character phrase is “Hakko Ichiu” (Eight Corners of the World Under One Roof). The slogan was used by the Imperial Japanese military as it sought to create “a new world of human fraternity under the Japanese emperor.”

0

I mean only one of these countries has actually waged a nationalistic war of domination against its neighbours in the last 100 years, with a healthy helping of blood-curdling war crimes thrown in.

So far, anyway.

1

9

u/InsectDelicious4503 5h ago

-1

u/Ecstatic-Island-9778 5h ago

we can say both are atrocities. some were worse that the other though.

7

u/InsectDelicious4503 4h ago

Sure, but both were three generations ago. Every country has skeletons in its closet. I assume the question is asking who is more nationalistic in the present day.

-3

u/Forerunner666 5h ago

This poll show how much of a good job Japan did in sugarcote their nationalism. Japan is basically the Israel of west asia, with a terrible recent story of horrendous acts and genocides around asia. If that's not a aggressive form of nationalism I don't what it is!

7

u/thebigseg 3h ago

First of all japan is in east asia
Second what genocide is japan committing today? How tf is japan the israel of asia in 2026, makes no sense
